Personality
Personality
Yatsume is proud of the physical modifications preserved by his clan and reacts angrily when they are dismissed as monstrous deformities. He regards his elongated body as the product of deliberate refinement rather than abnormality.
His resentment toward Kenshin is unusually sincere compared with several of Enishi's other recruits. Yatsume connects the decline of his clan not only to his personal defeat but to the social changes produced by the Restoration and therefore regards Battousai as a symbol of the forces that destroyed his people's livelihood.
Despite his hostility, he possesses a degree of honor and respect for his comrades. He is less interested in indiscriminate cruelty than some members of the Six Comrades and remains focused on settling the grievance he has carried since the Bakumatsu.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yatsume's clan traditionally altered its members' bodies with metal rings from childhood, gradually lengthening their limbs so they could reach narrow areas while mining. His arms and legs are roughly one-and-a-half times normal proportions, while his left arm has been extended to approximately twice ordinary length.
His elongated limbs provide exceptional reach and unusual movement. Yatsume can climb, hide above opponents and attack from angles difficult for an ordinary fighter to reproduce. His sharpened teeth further contribute to his deliberately altered physique.
His left hand is equipped with large metal claws capable of tearing through earth. He combines these with his subterranean movement to launch attacks from unexpected directions. [Against Hajime Saitou, however, these advantages prove insufficient once Saitou reads his movements and counters his attacks.](#spoiler)
Story Role
Story Role
During Kenshin's Bakumatsu past, Yatsume belongs to the Yaminobu, the group assigned to weaken and assassinate Battousai. He participates in their final operation in the Binding Forest alongside Tatsumi, Nakajou, Sumita and Murakami.
Yatsume survives the Yaminobu's destruction and carries his resentment into the Meiji era. He later accepts Enishi's invitation to participate in Jinchū, becoming one of the few members whose desire for revenge against Kenshin is genuine.
Before he can obtain the duel he wants, Saitou takes his place as Yatsume's opponent. Saitou defeats him and prepares to finish him, but Kenshin intervenes. Kenshin offers Yatsume the opportunity to challenge him properly after recovering and suggests that his specialized body could instead be used productively in Hokkaido, where mining opportunities remain.

Kenshin Himura is Yatsume's long-standing enemy. Their conflict begins with the Yaminobu's attempt to assassinate Kenshin during the Bakumatsu, and Yatsume carries the resulting grievance into the Meiji era.
Enishi Yukishiro recruits Yatsume into the Six Comrades because of their shared desire for revenge against Kenshin.
Hajime Saitou becomes Yatsume's opponent during the Jinchū fighting. Saitou ridicules Yatsume's claims of physical refinement and decisively defeats him.
Tatsumi, Nakajou, Sumita and Murakami are Yatsume's comrades in the Yaminobu.
Hyougo Kujiranami, Inui Banjin, Otowa Hyouko and Gein later fight alongside him as members of the Six Comrades.
