Yami no Kemono

The Beast is cruel, predatory and relentlessly manipulative. It speaks with the voice of Guts's most destructive impulses, reframing compassion as weakness and relationships as chains preventing him from pursuing revenge.

It especially despises Guts's responsibility toward Casca because caring for her forces him away from the solitary hunt for Griffith. The Beast attempts to convince him that abandoning or destroying those bonds would restore the single-minded Black Swordsman he once was.

Its arguments are dangerous because they originate from genuine emotions within Guts. The Beast does not simply impose foreign desires upon him; it gives monstrous expression to anger, lust, fear and resentment he is already struggling to control.

The Beast of Darkness has no independent physical body in the conventional sense. Its principal power is psychological: it confronts Guts in visions and internal dialogue, tempting him toward violence and attempting to overwhelm his conscious restraint.

Its influence becomes more dangerous after Guts obtains the Berserker Armor. The armor responds to rage and pain, and its helmet takes on a canine form resembling the Beast when Guts activates it.

Through that connection, the Beast can symbolically push Guts toward surrendering control while the armor suppresses his awareness of injury and unlocks otherwise self-destructive physical strength.

The Beast emerges after the Eclipse as Guts's rage and desire for revenge become increasingly consuming. It challenges the idea that his violent crusade is separate from the pleasure and hatred he has learned to associate with killing Apostles.

When Guts becomes responsible for protecting the mentally regressed Casca, the Beast repeatedly urges him to remove her as an obstacle and return to hunting Griffith. During one of Guts's lowest moments, those impulses contribute to him sexually assaulting Casca before he regains control.

The arrival of new companions gives Guts stronger emotional restraints, but the Berserker Armor creates another avenue through which the Beast can pressure him. Schierke repeatedly helps Guts preserve his identity while using the armor.

After later events devastate Guts emotionally, the Beast again attempts to exploit his despair and presents surrender to darkness as an escape from suffering.

Guts is the mind from which the Beast of Darkness emerges. It embodies impulses Guts fears yet cannot simply deny.

Griffith is the primary object of the hatred and revenge that nourish the Beast.

Casca represents both Guts's love and one of the strongest bonds pulling him away from vengeance, making her a recurring target of the Beast's hostility.

Schierke helps Guts retain his consciousness while using the Berserker Armor, indirectly opposing the Beast's attempts to overwhelm him.

Skull Knight understands the danger of surrendering oneself to the Berserker Armor and warns Guts about the path he is following.
