Personality
Personality
Wyald is sadistic, impulsive and nihilistic. His personal philosophy revolves around enjoying whatever pleasure is available in the present, with no concern for morality or the lives of others.
He maintains authority over criminals largely because he is even more violent than they are. His soldiers fear his physical strength, and Wyald readily kills subordinates who disappoint or challenge him.
Unlike Apostles who preserve aristocratic ambitions or carefully conceal their nature, Wyald revels openly in brutality. Combat, sexual violence and terror are all forms of entertainment to him.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
As an Apostle, Wyald possesses strength, speed, durability and regenerative ability vastly exceeding normal humans. Even in his humanoid state, he can overpower trained warriors with ease.
His released Apostle form is an enormous, ape-like creature capable of smashing formations, uprooting trees and inflicting catastrophic physical damage.
Guts nevertheless proves capable of fighting him through exceptional skill and determination. Their battle demonstrates how far Guts has progressed since his earlier encounters with supernatural opponents.
Story Role
Story Role
After Griffith is rescued from imprisonment, the King of Midland orders Wyald and the Black Dog Knights to pursue the Band of the Hawk. Wyald treats the mission as an opportunity for slaughter.
Guts fights Wyald and inflicts seemingly fatal injuries, but the Apostle's regenerative ability allows him to continue. Wyald then reveals his demonic form to the Hawks and tries to force Griffith to activate the Crimson Behelit, believing the God Hand could restore him.
When Wyald discovers Griffith no longer has the behelit, Zodd arrives. Zodd recognizes Wyald as an Apostle and kills him, after which Wyald's body reverts to the frail old human form he possessed before his transformation.
