Vylk

Vylk is gentle, religious and devoted to his family. He recognizes that humans are intelligent beings with thoughts and emotions rather than mindless livestock, although he admits that circumstances have still led him to consume human meat.

His blindness makes his first encounter with the escaped children unusual. Unable to identify them visually as humans, he treats them with ordinary courtesy and demonstrates that impoverished civilian demons can behave very differently from the monsters the Grace Field children first encountered.

Vylk is especially protective of his granddaughter and willing to injure himself if doing so will keep her safe.

Vylk is a demon and therefore shares the biological characteristics of his species, but age and blindness leave him dependent on a walking stick rather than presenting him as a combatant.

Vylk possesses the Evil Blood because he previously drank blood descended from Mujika's gift. He can therefore retain his intelligence and humanoid form without regularly eating humans. His own blood can pass this protection to another demon.

This ability becomes critical during the attack on his village, demonstrating directly that degeneration is not an unavoidable consequence of demons ceasing to consume human flesh.

Vylk encounters Emma's group at an abandoned temple and mistakes them for demon children because he cannot see them. His behavior helps expose the ordinary life and hardship of demons living outside the ruling class.

When Norman's degeneration drug spreads through the village, Vylk remains unaffected. His granddaughter begins degenerating, but drinking his blood restores her. This provides direct evidence that Mujika's blood can permanently remove a demon's dependence on human meat.

Vylk later gives the human Emma another piece of the pen, which he obtained years earlier from a dying human. He ultimately joins the civilian uprising against the farms alongside Mujika and Sonju.

Emma is Vylk's granddaughter in the anime continuity, and he is fiercely protective of her.

Emma also shares her name with the human protagonist; Vylk's calls for his granddaughter initially create confusion between the two.

Mujika is the original source behind the bloodline that gives Vylk protection from degeneration.

Sonju eventually joins Vylk and Mujika in the civilian uprising against the farm system.

Norman nearly attacks Vylk and his granddaughter during the assault on the demon village before the effects of Vylk's blood challenge his assumptions about demon biology.
