Vargas

Vargas is intelligent, resourceful and deeply consumed by revenge. Years of suffering have not entirely destroyed his kindness, however, and he is capable of risking himself to protect people who have little direct connection to his vendetta.

His desperation makes him willing to tolerate Guts's harsh behavior because he believes the swordsman is the only person capable of defeating the Count.

Vargas also responds positively to Puck's compassion. Their interactions briefly make him consider whether living beyond revenge might still be possible.

Vargas has no supernatural abilities and his mutilations severely restrict his mobility. He compensates with medical knowledge, preparation and clever use of his surroundings.

As a physician, he possesses sufficient understanding of the human body and medicine to survive circumstances that would normally prove fatal. He even manages to fake his own death while imprisoned.

Vargas also uses smoke bombs effectively, helping Guts evade the Count's soldiers and move through the city unnoticed.

Vargas encounters Guts and Puck while they are pursued by the Count's forces. Recognizing Guts's ability, he brings them to his underground hideout and reveals the stolen beherit.

Vargas explains that he once served as the Count's physician. After discovering the Count's monstrous practices, he attempted to escape with his wife and two sons. They were captured; his family was killed and consumed before him, while Vargas himself was mutilated. He eventually escaped with the Count's beherit and spent seven years seeking revenge.

Vargas is later recaptured and publicly executed after Guts refuses to intervene. When the Count is eventually drawn toward the Abyss, Vargas appears among the dead spirits that seize him, finally obtaining the revenge he sought.

The Count is Vargas's former employer and the object of his revenge. The Count destroys Vargas's family and mutilates him after Vargas discovers his monstrous nature.

Guts is the warrior Vargas recruits to kill the Count. Their similarities as survivors driven by vengeance disturb Guts.

Puck treats Vargas compassionately and encourages him to consider abandoning revenge in favor of continuing to live.

Theresia is indirectly connected to Vargas through her father and the final sacrificial ceremony involving the Count.
