Uehira

Uehira is friendly, cooperative, and enthusiastic about meeting Kogorou, whose reputation as Sleeping Kogoro has reached even the relatively isolated Koumi Island. He readily accepts assistance from more experienced investigators rather than allowing pride to interfere with the case.

His uncertainty during the investigation reflects inexperience with serious crimes rather than indifference. Koumi Island is normally peaceful, leaving its resident officer without the routine exposure to murders and complex criminal investigations common among the Tokyo police.

Uehira has no extraordinary abilities. He possesses the standard training and authority of a police officer and is familiar with Koumi Island, its residents, and local facilities.

During the investigation, his main contribution comes through police cooperation and local support while Juzo Megure and the visiting detectives handle the more complicated aspects of the case.

Uehira becomes involved after professional treasure hunter Tomoyoshi Tayama is attacked by sharks while diving near Koumi Island. What initially appears to be a dangerous diving accident soon raises suspicions of deliberate interference.

The case brings Megure and other Tokyo officers to the island. Uehira assists them as the investigation expands into the activities of several professional treasure hunters and the legend of treasure belonging to Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

The investigation eventually establishes that Tayama's diving equipment had been deliberately rigged with fish blood to attract sharks, turning the apparent accident into a murder case.

Kogorou Mouri is a detective Uehira greatly admires because of his public reputation as Sleeping Kogoro.

Juzo Megure takes a leading role once the Koumi Island incident becomes a serious criminal investigation, with Uehira cooperating with the more experienced inspector.

Conan Edogawa contributes the deductions that uncover the truth behind the island's seemingly accidental incidents.

Tomoyoshi Tayama is the treasure hunter whose shark attack brings Uehira into the central investigation.
