Personality
Personality
Sukuna is supremely self-centered, sadistic, perceptive, and uninterested in moral restraints. He values strength, appetite, entertainment, and personal freedom and regards the suffering of weaker beings as irrelevant unless it affects something he personally wants.
Unlike villains driven primarily by ideology, Sukuna does not seek to improve society or vindicate an oppressed group. He acts because he desires something, destroys because he finds no reason not to, and shows respect only toward qualities that genuinely interest him.
He is nevertheless highly intelligent and capable of acknowledging strength in opponents. Sukuna understands jujutsu at an extraordinary level, studies techniques during combat, and can praise someone he considers impressive immediately before or after attempting to kill them.
His relationship with Yuuji is particularly hostile. Yuuji's ability to suppress him inside his own body offends Sukuna's sense of supremacy, and Sukuna frequently exploits opportunities to cause him emotional suffering rather than simply cooperating for mutual convenience.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Sukuna possesses enormous reserves of cursed energy, exceptional output, reverse cursed technique, physical power, and a level of technical knowledge that places him among the most sophisticated sorcerers ever shown.
His innate technique, Shrine, primarily manifests through slashing attacks. Dismantle is the basic ranged slash, while Cleave adjusts to the toughness and cursed-energy reinforcement of its target to cut more efficiently.
Sukuna can use reverse cursed technique to regenerate catastrophic injuries and can restore others under some circumstances. He also possesses exceptional knowledge of the soul, binding vows, barriers, and the mechanics through which incarnated sorcerers inhabit vessels.
Malevolent Shrine is his Domain Expansion. Unlike most domains, it does not enclose its target inside a conventional barrier shell. Instead, Sukuna manifests the domain directly into open space and permits an escape route in exchange for dramatically expanded effective range. This feat is repeatedly treated as almost divine barrier technique.
The technique associated with flames is deliberately mysterious through much of the series. Later manga material identifies the broader Shrine technique as including Furnace, a fire attack Sukuna can prepare after using Cleave and Dismantle.
His original Heian-era body possesses four arms and two mouths, an enormous advantage for jujutsu because he can form hand signs and chant while still fighting physically.
Story Role
Story Role
Sukuna enters the modern story when Yuuji swallows one of his fingers to gain enough cursed energy to fight a curse. Instead of being consumed completely, Yuuji becomes an unusually stable vessel capable of suppressing Sukuna.
Gojou tests the newly incarnated Sukuna immediately and demonstrates that the partial incarnation is not yet an immediate match for the strongest modern sorcerer.
Sukuna's influence increases as Yuuji consumes more fingers. During the detention-center mission, Sukuna takes control and demonstrates just how far above ordinary curses he stands by effortlessly destroying a finger bearer.
He uses the opportunity to manipulate Yuuji's body and later establishes the "Enchain" binding vow, securing one minute of future control under specific conditions while erasing Yuuji's memory of the agreement.
Sukuna also develops a conspicuous interest in Megumi Fushiguro and the Ten Shadows Technique. He refuses to explain the interest, but repeatedly protects or observes Megumi for reasons unrelated to ordinary affection.
During Shibuya, Sukuna is temporarily given control after Yuuji is force-fed multiple fingers. He fights Jougo and later confronts Mahoraga after the shikigami is summoned by Megumi.
Sukuna uses the Enchain vow to transfer himself from Yuuji into Megumi, taking advantage of Megumi's emotional collapse to turn him into a new vessel. He later uses the Ten Shadows Technique and Megumi's soul as part of his preparations for fighting Gojou.
After recovering his remaining power through nineteen fingers and the preserved remains of his former body, Sukuna fights Gojou in Shinjuku. He uses Mahoraga's adaptation as a model for extending Dismantle's target to space itself and defeats Gojou with the resulting world-cutting slash.
The surviving sorcerers then execute a prolonged succession of attacks designed to separate Sukuna from Megumi. Yuuji ultimately becomes the central opponent capable of striking the boundary between their souls.
Relationships
Relationships
Yuuji Itadori serves as Sukuna's initial vessel and is one of the few humans able to suppress his consciousness. Sukuna despises Yuuji and deliberately exploits opportunities to torment him.
Megumi Fushiguro attracts Sukuna's attention early because of the potential of the Ten Shadows Technique. Sukuna later turns Megumi into his vessel and appropriates the technique for his own battles.
Satoru Gojou represents the strongest modern sorcerer and the opponent Sukuna accepts as a true challenge. Their eventual battle determines which of the two can impose his understanding of jujutsu on the other.
Jougo challenges Sukuna in Shibuya. Sukuna completely outclasses him but ultimately acknowledges his strength.
Mahoraga is the Ten Shadows Technique's strongest shikigami and becomes central to Sukuna's interest in Megumi's technique.
Uraume is Sukuna's loyal attendant from his ancient life and continues serving him after reincarnation.
Kenjaku has a historical connection to Sukuna and is responsible for preserving numerous ancient sorcerers through cursed objects.
Yorozu is an ancient sorcerer obsessed with Sukuna and convinced that she can teach him love through battle.
