Shukichi Haneda

Shukichi is intelligent, easygoing, eccentric, and extraordinarily focused when something important is at stake. His casual appearance can make him seem less formidable than his reputation suggests, but his concentration during shogi matches is exceptional.

He is deeply devoted to Yumi. Much of the confusion in their relationship comes from his failure to explain himself clearly, including the significance of his professional goals. Even after being treated as an ex-boyfriend, he continues to regard their relationship seriously.

Shukichi possesses a remarkable memory. Information he has seen only briefly can remain useful years later, and his strategic thinking extends naturally from shogi into criminal deduction.

Shukichi is an elite professional shogi player capable of competing for every major title. His ability to calculate long sequences of moves, remember board positions, and maintain concentration under severe pressure establishes him among the strongest players in the series.

He also possesses exceptional memory and deductive reasoning. Shukichi can reconstruct events from small details and occasionally reaches conclusions comparable to those of the series' established detectives.

His skills are entirely human, but the speed and accuracy of his strategic reasoning make him valuable whenever a case overlaps with his personal life or professional matches.

Shukichi is introduced as Yumi's apparently ordinary former boyfriend before his identity as a famous professional shogi player becomes clear. His pursuit of the seven major titles forms the centerpiece of several cases, with Conan becoming involved when criminal incidents threaten his matches or the people around him.

His professional ambitions are closely tied to a promise involving Yumi. Shukichi succeeds in becoming a seven-title holder, although he later loses one of those titles in a rematch with Chikara Katsumata.

His family background later connects him directly to several of the series' largest ongoing mysteries. Shukichi was born into the Akai family and is the younger brother of Shuichi Akai and older brother of Masumi Sera. After high school he was adopted into the Haneda family, whose son Kohji had been an important shogi player before his murder seventeen years earlier.

Yumi Miyamoto is Shukichi's girlfriend and the person around whom much of his personal motivation revolves. Yumi Miyamoto calls him "Chukichi" and initially knows surprisingly little about his fame in professional shogi.

Shuichi Akai is connected to Shukichi through his hidden family history. Shuichi is Shukichi's older biological brother, and Shukichi is one of the family members aware that Shuichi survived his apparent death.

Masumi Sera is likewise connected to Shukichi through that family. She is his younger sister and refers to him affectionately as Kichi-nii.

Mary has a close familial connection to Shukichi. Mary is his biological mother and brought her children to Japan after their father disappeared.

Kohji Haneda is the figure whose surname Shukichi eventually carries. Kohji is Shukichi's non-blood older brother through the Haneda family, and his unsolved murder is deeply connected to the series' larger Black Organization mystery.

Chikara Katsumata is one of Shukichi's major professional shogi rivals. After Shukichi achieves all seven titles, Chikara defeats him in a subsequent title match.

Conan Edogawa becomes involved in several incidents surrounding Shukichi and recognizes his exceptional memory and reasoning ability.
