Shiro

Shiro is energetic, affectionate and impulsive. She speaks simply, loves sweets and games, and can appear oblivious to social conventions that other teenagers take for granted. Her attachment to Ganta is immediate and intense because she remembers the friendship they shared as children, while he initially treats her as a strange girl he has only just met.

Her cheerful behavior can disappear when she feels rejected or abandoned. Ganta's inability to remember her hurts deeply, and her reactions reveal a much more emotionally vulnerable person beneath the playful exterior.

Shiro's personality is also a psychological defense against years of horrific experimentation. The suffering inflicted on her produced another personality, the Wretched Egg, whose hatred and destructive impulses stand in stark contrast to Shiro's desire to stay beside Ganta.

Shiro possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility and durability even without visibly using blood as a weapon. She can move through Deadman Wonderland's dangerous infrastructure with ease and survive injuries that would incapacitate an ordinary person.

Shiro is the original source of the Nameless Worm phenomenon and possesses the Branch of Sin known as Original Sin. As the Wretched Egg, she can manipulate enormous quantities of blood, generate destructive attacks and produce the red crystal material associated with the creation of other Deadmen.

The Mother Goose System suppresses the Wretched Egg and is tied to the lullaby written by Sorae Igarashi. When its restraints weaken, Shiro's destructive power becomes capable of devastation on the scale associated with the Great Tokyo Earthquake.

Shiro meets Ganta inside Deadman Wonderland shortly after his imprisonment and insists that they were childhood friends. She helps him survive the prison's attractions and dangers while trying to make him remember their time together.

Her familiarity with restricted areas and unusual physical abilities gradually make her one of the central mysteries surrounding the prison. Rinichirō Hagire's research and Sorae Igarashi's work are eventually revealed to be closely connected to her childhood.

Shiro is the Wretched Egg—the Red Man responsible for the massacre of Ganta's classmates. Her alternate personality implants the red crystal into Ganta and turns him into a Deadman. The revelation transforms Ganta's search for his friends' killer into a conflict with the childhood friend he had forgotten.

Ganta Igarashi is Shiro's childhood friend and the person to whom she is most strongly attached. She is also the Red Man Ganta spends much of the story trying to find, placing love, guilt and vengeance at the center of their relationship.

Sorae Igarashi cared for Shiro during her childhood and became an adoptive maternal figure to her. She was also one of the researchers involved in the experiments performed on Shiro.

Rinichirō Hagire treats Shiro as his most important experimental subject and is obsessed with the extraordinary phenomenon her body produced.

Chan and En are fellow adopted children of Hagire and are regarded as Shiro's adoptive siblings.
