Ryoji Ikegami

Ikegami is composed, selfless and disciplined. He attracts considerably less attention than Uozumi or Akira Sendoh, but he willingly performs the defensive work necessary for Ryonan's stars to operate effectively.

His calm temperament distinguishes him from the emotional Uozumi. Ikegami rarely allows frustration to dictate his decisions and accepts tactical assignments without making them about his personal statistics.

He also possesses the mentality required of a defensive specialist. Guarding an opponent closely for extended stretches demands patience, concentration and willingness to expend energy without necessarily receiving the ball on offense.

Ikegami is Ryonan's best defensive specialist. At 183 cm, he has enough size to guard forwards while retaining the mobility necessary to pressure perimeter players.

His strength lies in persistent man-to-man coverage. Taoka can assign him to whichever opposing scorer needs to be slowed, making him a flexible tactical option.

Against Shohoku, he is used against both Sakuragi and Mitsui at different points. His defense temporarily suppresses Mitsui's outside shooting, demonstrating his ability to contest an elite shooter without abandoning Ryonan's broader defensive structure.

Ikegami is not portrayed as a major scorer. His value comes from defense, experience and intelligent positioning rather than carrying Ryonan's offense.

Ikegami appears during Shohoku's early practice game with Ryonan and remains an important veteran throughout the prefectural tournament. His responsibilities increase whenever Taoka needs a defensive adjustment.

During the decisive rematch with Shohoku, Ikegami is used to contain Sakuragi when the first-year becomes overly focused on his personal battle with Kicchou Fukuda. Later, Taoka shifts Ikegami onto Mitsui to suppress Shohoku's perimeter shooting.

Ikegami's defense contributes to Ryonan remaining competitive until the final stages, but Shohoku ultimately wins and takes the prefecture's second national berth. Following the defeat, Ikegami ends his club career alongside Uozumi.

His final moments with Ryonan are restrained compared with Uozumi's emotional reaction, consistent with the quiet composure he displays throughout the series.

Jun Uozumi is Ikegami's captain and fellow third-year veteran. Together they provide senior leadership for Ryonan.

Moichi Taoka trusts Ikegami as his premier defensive specialist and gives him assignments against dangerous opposing scorers.

Akira Sendoh is Ryonan's offensive ace, and Ikegami's defensive work helps create a team structure in which Sendoh can focus heavily on scoring and playmaking.

Kicchou Fukuda is a more offense-oriented teammate whose defensive limitations make Ikegami's specialization particularly valuable.

Hisashi Mitsui becomes one of Ikegami's major defensive assignments during the decisive Shohoku-Ryonan game.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is another player Ikegami is asked to contain during that matchup.
