Ren Souma

Ren is possessive, manipulative and consumed by jealousy. Her love for Akira becomes so exclusive that she regards competing claims on his affection as intolerable.

She is skilled at exploiting other people's vulnerabilities and can present herself as sympathetic when doing so serves her aims. Her hostility is not limited to open confrontation; she also encourages resentment and conflict within the already divided inner household.

Ren's behavior is driven by an inability to accept relationships that do not revolve around her. The emotional insight that initially lets her recognize Akira's loneliness becomes distorted into possessiveness.

Ren has no supernatural abilities and is not part of the Zodiac bond.

Her influence comes from her position as Akira's widow, her history within the inner household and her ability to manipulate divisions among the Souma servants and family members.

She understands the importance attached to the Zodiac bond but rejects its claim to be stronger than her relationship with Akira.

Ren's history explains much of the hostility and instability surrounding Akito's upbringing. She enters the Souma household as a maid and becomes the one person who openly recognizes how lonely Akira is beneath the reverence surrounding the family head.

After becoming pregnant, Ren becomes jealous of Akira's affection for their unborn child and insists that Akito be raised as male. She later treats her daughter as a romantic rival for Akira's love rather than as her child.

Ren also challenges Akito's belief in the permanence of the Zodiac bond, turning the question of whether those relationships will endure into a cruel contest between mother and daughter.

Akira Souma is Ren's husband and the object of her obsessive devotion. She initially wins Akira Souma's affection by recognizing his loneliness when others see only the family head.

Akito Souma is Ren's child. Ren treats Akito as a rival for Akira's love, forces her to be raised publicly as male and repeatedly attacks the idea that the Zodiac bond proves Akito is uniquely loved.

Shigure Souma becomes involved in the hostility between Ren and Akito. Shigure sleeps with Ren in retaliation after learning about Akito's relationship with Kureno, deliberately using Ren to wound Akito.

Kureno Souma is central to Ren's suspicions about the weakening Zodiac bond, although she does not initially know the full truth of his circumstances.
