Reiji Maruko

Reiji is intelligent, calculating and increasingly ruthless about victory. He is not physically exceptional compared with the monsters he recruits, so his greatest strength is identifying useful players and constructing a team around them.

His obsession with strength develops from fear of Teikoku's dominance. He concludes that ordinary improvement cannot close the gap and begins treating overwhelming force as the only realistic path to the Christmas Bowl.

Reiji is capable of charm and was originally considerably gentler. His harsher football persona does not completely erase that side of him, particularly in his interactions with Himuro.

Reiji's personal athletic statistics are modest for an elite quarterback: a 5.2-second 40-yard dash and 60 kg bench press. His real advantage is tactical intelligence.

His signature Screw Bite technique targets the football itself. Rather than overpowering the ball carrier, Reiji wraps and twists around the ball to force a fumble, making him dangerous as a safety despite his limited strength.

As quarterback, he manages an offense built around Gaou's blocking and Hakushuu's physical superiority. His strategic ability allows him to make far stronger athletes function as parts of a coherent system.

Reiji becomes obsessed with defeating Teikoku after witnessing its dominance and begins recruiting players capable of building a physically overwhelming team. His most important acquisition is Gaou.

Hakushuu rapidly becomes one of the Kanto Tournament's most feared teams because opposing quarterbacks are repeatedly injured under Gaou's pressure. Reiji accepts that brutality as part of the route to victory.

His methods damage his relationship with Himuro and carry Hakushuu through increasingly dangerous games until Deimon finally defeats the Dinosaurs in the Kanto final. The loss ends Reiji's attempt to reach Teikoku through brute strength during that tournament.

Maruko Himuro is Reiji's childhood acquaintance, manager and romantic interest. His original ambition to win the Christmas Bowl is partly connected to impressing Maruko Himuro. His increasingly ruthless methods later create a serious divide between them.

Rikiya Gaou is the cornerstone of Reiji's plan. Reiji recognizes Rikiya Gaou's extraordinary power and builds Hakushuu's identity around exploiting it.

Hiromi Kisaragi is another Hakushuu player whose devotion to strength fits Reiji's team philosophy.

Youichi Hiruma becomes Reiji's opposing quarterback when Hakushuu meets Deimon, creating a contest between two tacticians with very different approaches to their players.
