Nozomi Takamiya

Takamiya is mischievous, gluttonous and extremely comfortable making Sakuragi the target of jokes. He joins enthusiastically in the gang's mockery of Sakuragi's romantic failures and basketball mistakes, sometimes provoking an immediate physical response.

He is also openly confident despite frequently becoming the butt of jokes himself. His appetite is a recurring gag, as is his tendency to become distracted by food or attractive girls.

Underneath the comedy, Takamiya is deeply loyal. When spectators insult Sakuragi during games, he is among the friends most willing to defend him. The gang may ridicule Sakuragi constantly among themselves, but Takamiya does not tolerate outsiders dismissing his friend.

Takamiya has substantial street-fighting experience despite his unathletic-looking build. He participates effectively when Sakuragi's Gang becomes involved in violent confrontations and can overwhelm larger delinquents.

His body weight can itself become a comedic weapon, particularly when he crashes into or lands on Sakuragi. These moments are generally played for humor rather than presented as a formal fighting technique.

Takamiya has no established competitive basketball ability. His contribution to Shohoku is as a spectator and supporter rather than a player.

Takamiya is present from the beginning as part of Sakuragi's pre-basketball life. He helps establish the delinquent social circle from which Sakuragi enters Shohoku's basketball club.

His role becomes more substantial during Hisashi Mitsui's attack on the basketball team. Takamiya and the other members of Sakuragi's Gang enter the confrontation and help deal with Mitsui's accompanying delinquents.

Afterward, he regularly attends Shohoku's matches. His reactions provide comic commentary from the stands, but his support also tracks an important change: the friends who initially laugh at Sakuragi's basketball ambitions come to take those ambitions seriously.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Takamiya's longtime friend and favorite target for teasing. Their constant comic antagonism coexists with genuine loyalty.

Yohei Mito, Yuji Ookusu and Chuuichirou Noma are Takamiya's fellow members of Sakuragi's Gang.

Haruko Akagi becomes part of the group's social circle through her friendship with Sakuragi and her presence at Shohoku's games.

Hisashi Mitsui encounters Takamiya during the gymnasium incident that brings Sakuragi's friends into direct conflict with Mitsui's delinquent group.
