Yohei Mito

Yohei is relaxed, perceptive and dryly humorous. While the other members of Sakuragi's gang enthusiastically tease their friend, Yohei is usually the first to recognize when Sakuragi is genuinely upset or when a joke has reached its limit.

His understanding of Sakuragi is rooted in their long friendship. Yohei can distinguish between Sakuragi's exaggerated boasting and the moments when his confidence has actually been damaged. He rarely lectures him; instead, he offers a short observation or simply remains nearby until Sakuragi works through the problem himself.

Yohei is also exceptionally loyal. He supports Sakuragi's basketball ambitions even though the sport gradually consumes much of the time they previously spent together. Rather than resenting that change, he recognizes that Sakuragi has finally found something he genuinely cares about.

Yohei is an accomplished street fighter and generally the most capable fighter in Sakuragi's gang after Sakuragi himself. He remains composed in violent situations and can defeat ordinary delinquents without needing Sakuragi to protect him.

During the confrontation surrounding Mitsui's gang, Yohei demonstrates that he can handle serious opponents directly. His fighting ability makes him useful when the basketball team risks becoming entangled in a scandal that could threaten its season.

His greatest strength within the narrative, however, is observation. Yohei reads people well, particularly Sakuragi, and frequently understands the psychological significance of events that others interpret only as comedy or basketball.

Yohei is present from Sakuragi's life before basketball and therefore provides one of the clearest measures of how much his friend changes. He witnesses Sakuragi's repeated romantic rejections, his first encounter with Haruko Akagi and his initially superficial decision to approach basketball.

As Sakuragi becomes increasingly serious about the sport, Yohei continues attending games with Nozomi Takamiya, Yuji Ohkusu and Chuichiro Noma. Their teasing never disappears, but it is accompanied by genuine investment in Shohoku's success.

Yohei plays an important role during Hisashi Mitsui's attack on the basketball team. He and Sakuragi's friends help prevent the players from carrying the full responsibility for the violence, protecting the basketball club from consequences that could destroy its competitive season.

He also recognizes Sakuragi's emotional responses during difficult games. When Sakuragi is humiliated by Kicchou Fukuda during the Ryonan match, Yohei understands the depth of his frustration rather than treating it as another outburst.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Yohei's closest friend. Yohei understands his pride, insecurities and increasingly sincere love of basketball better than almost anyone outside the team.

Nozomi Takamiya, Yuji Ohkusu and Chuichiro Noma are Yohei's fellow members of Sakuragi's gang. Together they attend Shohoku's games, tease Sakuragi and support him when circumstances become serious.

Hisashi Mitsui encounters Yohei during the violent confrontation at the Shohoku gym. Yohei becomes directly involved in stopping the delinquent group surrounding Mitsui.

Tetsuo is another formidable delinquent Yohei encounters through the conflict involving Mitsui.

Haruko Akagi is central to Sakuragi's initial interest in basketball, and Yohei is fully aware of his friend's feelings for her.

Kaede Rukawa is Sakuragi's constant rival and therefore a frequent subject of Yohei's observations and the gang's teasing.
