Njall

Njall is an infant, and the manga does not establish a distinct personality for him.

His presence is nevertheless important to the adults around him, particularly because questions of inheritance and succession have shaped Sigurd's relationship with Halfdan for years.

Njall has no combat abilities, professional skills, or other established powers because he is only eight months old when introduced.

His importance is familial rather than physical.

Njall appears after Sigurd's long conflict with Halfdan over the future planned for him.

He is the son of Sigurd and Hattrgerd, born after Sigurd rejects the life his father originally chose and attempts to establish an independent household.

The practical difficulties surrounding Njall's birth and infancy help bring his parents back into contact with Halfdan's household. Halfdan subsequently names the infant as his successor, resolving the inheritance problem created when Sigurd refuses that role for himself.

Njall therefore represents a new generation through which the family can continue without forcing Sigurd back into the precise future he rejected.

Sigurd is Njall's father.

Hattrgerd is Njall's mother.

Halfdan is Njall's grandfather and selects the infant as his eventual successor after Sigurd rejects the inheritance.

Asrid is Njall's grandmother and helps reconnect the young family with Halfdan's household.
