Hattrgerd

Hattrgerd is headstrong, jealous, proud, and very conscious of her attractiveness. She has expected to become Sigurd's wife for years and therefore interprets Gudrid's arrival as both a romantic insult and a threat to her standing within the household.

Her rivalry is driven less by hatred of Gudrid personally than by the patriarchal hierarchy imposed by Halfdan, who assigns greater importance to Gudrid because that marriage provides more valuable family connections.

Hattrgerd's long history with Sigurd also makes her more comfortable challenging and teasing him than someone entering the household through formal arrangement.

Hattrgerd is shown practicing sword fighting with Sigurd during their childhood, establishing at least some familiarity with weapons.

The manga does not portray her as a professional warrior, and no specialized fighting style or exceptional battlefield ability is established.

Her practical role is primarily within the household and family rather than warfare.

Hattrgerd appears after Halfdan arranges for Gudrid to become Sigurd's politically favored wife.

Although Hattrgerd was chronologically Sigurd's first wife, Halfdan places Gudrid above her because Gudrid's marriage is more important to the household's political interests. Hattrgerd consequently treats Gudrid as a rival.

After Gudrid flees and Sigurd spends months pursuing Thorfinn's expedition, Hattrgerd remains tied to the household. When Sigurd finally returns and rejects the path Halfdan selected for him, he chooses Hattrgerd as the person with whom he wants to build his own life.

Hattrgerd later gives birth to their son Njall while she and Sigurd are living independently. The birth helps bring the young family back into contact with Halfdan and Asrid.

Sigurd is Hattrgerd's childhood friend and husband. Their bond predates his arranged marriage to Gudrid and eventually becomes the foundation of the independent life he chooses.

Gudrid is initially Hattrgerd's romantic and household rival because Halfdan designates Gudrid as Sigurd's higher-status wife.

Halfdan is Hattrgerd's father-in-law and the person whose marriage arrangements create much of her early resentment.

Asrid is Hattrgerd's mother-in-law and maintains a warmer domestic relationship with the younger members of the family.

Njall is Hattrgerd and Sigurd's son.
