Vinland Saga

Halfdan

ハーフダン

Story Role

Halfdan first appears when an escaped slave reaches Thors's Icelandic village. Halfdan arrives intending to reclaim the man and punish him publicly as an example to his other slaves.

Thors avoids a direct armed conflict but ultimately purchases the man's freedom at enormous personal cost.

Years later, Halfdan reenters the story after Thorfinn returns from Denmark. He becomes involved in Thorfinn's proposed Vinland expedition because the project requires substantial resources and trade capital.

Halfdan also arranges Gudrid's marriage to his son Sigurd, treating the union primarily as a political and economic alliance. Gudrid's flight and Sigurd's subsequent pursuit create a prolonged conflict within the household.

Sigurd eventually returns and rejects the succession Halfdan has planned for him. Halfdan responds harshly but ultimately acknowledges his son's willingness to accept the consequences of independence.
