Ninny Spangcole

Ninny is confident, expressive, competitive, and quick-tempered. Her emotions are easy to read, particularly when she feels insulted or believes someone is underestimating her. She has little of Noel's patience for quietly accepting unpleasant assignments and openly complains about being stuck with work she considers beneath her talents.

Ambition is central to her personality. Ninny wants to transfer into the Sabres because combat assignments carry more prestige and offer clearer opportunities for advancement. She takes pride in her witch abilities and resents situations where her Pipers rank makes her appear less accomplished than more combat-focused members of Wing Bind.

Her celebrity career adds another dimension to that ambition. In Front London she performs publicly as the lead singer of Cecile Die Twice, meaning she already receives attention unavailable to most witches. Even so, she keeps her Reverse London work separate from that career and takes her responsibilities as a witch seriously.

Ninny's competitiveness does not prevent loyalty. She complains constantly about Balgo, Noel, and inconvenient missions, but when either partner is endangered she commits herself fully. Her temper often masks genuine concern, particularly when she is frustrated that other people are taking unnecessary risks.

Ninny is a trained Wing Bind witch capable of directly interacting with dragons, using magical equipment, and fighting Dark Dragons that would be invisible to ordinary Front London residents. Her Witch Kit functions as the focus for her spellcasting and allows her to fire powerful magical attacks.

She is especially comfortable in direct combat. Whereas Noel often emphasizes controlled management, Ninny actively wants assignments that let her demonstrate offensive ability. This aggressive style fits her stated desire to transfer into the Sabres.

Ninny can use standard witch spells for movement, restraint, and attack, and she works particularly well in combination with Noel. Their partnership allows one to compensate when the other's spellcasting or positioning is compromised.

She is also experienced in dragon handling because of her Pipers work. Even if she finds some conservation duties tedious, she understands the practical differences between ordinary domesticated dragons and dangerous Dark Dragons and knows when extermination is appropriate.

Ninny's battle with Cinderella forces her to confront a Marchen rather than a normal dragon. The encounter demonstrates that her ambition toward combat work is not empty bravado: she remains active and useful even against a legendary dragon whose abilities exceed the scale of standard Wing Bind assignments.

Ninny begins as Noel's senior partner and the more openly dissatisfied member of their Pipers team. She sees dragon conservation as necessary work but would rather earn enough achievements to transfer to the Sabres, making Balgo's increasingly dangerous case both an inconvenience and a possible career opportunity.

Her public identity as a singer creates a sharp divide between Front and Reverse London. While Noel's civilian life is relatively anonymous, Ninny is recognizable and professionally active on the surface. This dual life reinforces how thoroughly Wing Bind operatives must separate ordinary London from the supernatural world beneath it.

Balgo's Dragonclad condition places Ninny and Noel under increasing scrutiny. Because dragons are drawn to him, he becomes both a security problem and a potential source of rare incidents. Ninny initially treats him as another frustrating assignment, but repeated contact makes it impossible for her to see him only as a file or target.

The arrival of Bruno Bangnyfe turns the situation into a direct conflict within Wing Bind. Bruno considers Balgo dangerous enough to kill, while Ninny and Noel resist reducing him to a threat category. Their refusal demonstrates that both witches are willing to challenge more powerful officers when their own judgment differs.

Cinderella's emergence transforms the case into a confrontation with one of the Marchen. Ninny's participation in the battle brings her closer to the kind of high-level combat she has always wanted, although under far more dangerous circumstances than a normal Sabres mission.

Noel Niihashi is Ninny's junior partner and closest professional companion. Noel Niihashi's calm decision-making regularly balances Ninny's impulsiveness, while Ninny pushes Noel toward action when Noel would prefer to avoid complications. She calls Noel "Niiha," a nickname Noel does not particularly appreciate.

Balgo Ywain Parks is the Dragonclad Ninny helps supervise. Balgo Ywain Parks's irresponsible behavior and obsession with Noel irritate her, but she nevertheless becomes protective of him once other Wing Bind members treat him as disposable.

Osushi is Balgo's dragon companion and another responsibility shared by Ninny and Noel. Osushi's tendency to cause chaos makes him exactly the kind of dragon-management problem Ninny finds exhausting.

Bruno Bangnyfe is a higher-ranking Wing Bind combat officer whose methods clash with Ninny's. Bruno Bangnyfe's willingness to kill Balgo pushes Ninny into direct opposition with a member of the organization she hopes to advance within.

Billy Banx Jr. is Ninny's superior in Pipers. Billy Banx Jr. supervises her work while often displaying a much more relaxed attitude toward the job than Ninny's own career ambition would suggest.
