Personality
Personality
Merry is gentle, conscientious and protective. He usually speaks with restraint, but he directly challenges Klahadore when the other butler’s treatment of Usopp causes Kaya distress.
He is emotionally expressive and deeply attached to the household he serves. Official material describes him as compassionate and prone to tears despite his willingness to confront anyone threatening Kaya.
Merry takes his responsibilities seriously without trying to control Kaya’s future. After the Black Cat Pirates are defeated, he helps her thank the visitors who protected the village.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Merry has no established supernatural abilities or formal combat style. He attempts to defend Kaya with a firearm after discovering Klahadore’s true intentions.
His most consequential skill is ship design. He creates the Going Merry, a caravel recognizable by its sheep-shaped figurehead and compact layout.
Merry survives severe claw wounds inflicted by Kuro and remains conscious long enough to warn Kaya. His recovery allows him to continue serving the household after the attack.
The vessel he designed withstands extensive travel across the East Blue, Grand Line and sky islands, although repeated damage and inexperienced repairs eventually compromise its keel.
Story Role
Story Role
Merry initially appears as one of Kaya’s two principal caretakers. He tolerates Usopp’s visits because the stories improve Kaya’s health, placing him at odds with the stricter Klahadore.
After Usopp claims that Klahadore is Captain Kuro, Merry investigates and confronts the butler. Kuro reveals himself and slashes Merry across the chest, leaving him for dead.
Merry survives and reaches Kaya in time to confirm Usopp’s warning. His testimony sends her toward the coast, where the conflict with the Black Cat Pirates is already underway.
After Kuro’s defeat, Merry presents the Going Merry to Luffy and his companions on Kaya’s behalf. The ship becomes the Straw Hats’ home through their early Grand Line adventures.
Relationships
Relationships
Kaya is Merry’s employer and the person he is most committed to protecting. He respects her friendship with Usopp because it restores her happiness.
Usopp initially creates disruption around the estate, but Merry recognizes his positive effect on Kaya and later accepts him as one of her rescuers.
Kuro, under the identity Klahadore, serves beside Merry in the household. Merry’s challenge to his conduct leads Kuro to reveal the conspiracy and attack him.
Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats receive Merry’s ship after saving the village. The Going Merry carries his name and retains a figurehead modeled on his sheep-like appearance.
