Megumi Tadokoro

Megumi grows up in a snowy coastal town in the Tohoku region, where her family operates Shokei'en, a traditional inn. Food is consequently part of her life long before she enters formal culinary education. She learns to think about meals from the perspective of hospitality: guests arrive tired, cold, anxious or unfamiliar with their surroundings, and the cook's responsibility is to give them something suited to those needs. That philosophy remains the foundation of her cuisine throughout Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma.

Megumi leaves home because she wants to become skilled enough to contribute meaningfully to the family business. She enrolls in Tootsuki's junior-high division, but the transition into its highly competitive environment is difficult. Her problem is not an absence of culinary knowledge. Under examination conditions, her nervousness becomes so severe that she makes avoidable mistakes and performs far below her actual ability.

By the beginning of the high-school division, Megumi ranks at the bottom of her class and is effectively on academic probation. Another failing grade could result in expulsion. Even entering Polar Star Dormitory had been difficult for her; she reportedly needed three months before successfully passing the cooking test required by its dormitory supervisor.

Her situation changes when she is paired with Souma Yukihira during an early class assignment. Megumi expects Souma's unconventional behavior to make her predicament worse, but working beside someone almost completely unaffected by examination pressure helps her concentrate on the food itself.

The pair successfully complete their assignment, beginning a friendship that becomes one of Megumi's most important sources of confidence. Souma quickly recognizes that Megumi has good culinary instincts when fear is not interfering with them.

Moving through Tootsuki with the other Polar Star residents also exposes Megumi to specialties far beyond the regional cooking she learned at home. Megumi nevertheless represents a culinary philosophy very different from Erina's early worldview. Megumi Tadokoro values emotional comfort and regional familiarity, while Erina Nakiri initially evaluates cuisine according to exceptionally rigid standards of refinement.

Takumi Aldini is another member of Megumi's generation who becomes a regular ally. Megumi Tadokoro has little of Takumi Aldini's aggressive rivalry with Souma, but she respects his experience as a restaurant cook.

Isami Aldini similarly becomes part of Megumi's wider Tootsuki friendship group. Both Megumi Tadokoro and Isami Aldini tend to be calmer than their more competitive companions.

Yuki Yoshino is one of Megumi's closest friends at Polar Star Dormitory. Yuki Yoshino's energetic personality contrasts with Megumi's reserved nature, but the dormitory's shared kitchen life gives them a strong everyday friendship.

Ryoko Sakaki is another close dormitory companion. Megumi Tadokoro benefits from Ryoko Sakaki's calm demeanor, while Ryoko's knowledge of fermentation broadens the culinary environment in which Megumi develops.

Shun Ibusaki, Zenji Marui, Daigo Aoki and Shoji Sato complete much of Megumi's immediate Polar Star community. Shared meals and constant exposure to their specialties turn the dormitory into a second culinary education alongside formal classes.

Satoshi Isshiki is Megumi's senior at Polar Star and one of the earliest highly ranked chefs to treat its younger residents as serious cooks. Megumi Tadokoro initially has little idea how exceptional Satoshi Isshiki actually is.

His presence helps normalize the idea that elite ability does not require the severe demeanor Megumi associates with Tootsuki's strongest students.

Koujirou Shinomiya becomes one of the first professional chefs to force Megumi into direct confrontation with her own weaknesses. Koujirou Shinomiya fails her during the training camp after she alters his recipe.

The resulting unofficial shokugeki changes both of them. Megumi Tadokoro must defend her culinary decisions before someone vastly more experienced, while Koujirou Shinomiya is forced to consider whether inflexible adherence to his recipe has become counterproductive.

Shinomiya ultimately recognizes the intention behind her food, giving Megumi Tadokoro one of her first significant endorsements from an elite professional chef.

Ryou Kurokiba becomes Megumi's opponent during the Autumn Elections. Ryou Kurokiba's seafood expertise and intensely aggressive competitive style make him almost the opposite of Megumi.

Their match becomes especially significant because both understand seafood through practical experience. Megumi Tadokoro's knowledge comes from a Tohoku fishing community, while Ryou Kurokiba develops his through years of fighting for culinary dominance in harbor kitchens.

The contest proves that Megumi's regional background can stand against one of her generation's strongest specialists even when she does not win every confrontation.

Akira Hayama and Alice Nakiri are other elite first-year students whose abilities provide reference points for Megumi's growth. Megumi Tadokoro begins the series far below their public reputations but gradually enters competitions at the same level.

Hinako Inui, a Tootsuki alumna and professional chef, takes an immediate liking to Megumi during the training camp. Hinako Inui's own emphasis on Japanese ingredients gives her an appreciation for Megumi's style.

Jouichirou Yukihira becomes familiar with Megumi through her friendship with his son and the Polar Star connection. Megumi Tadokoro respects Jouichirou Yukihira's extraordinary cooking ability while also discovering another source of Souma's unusual attitude toward competition.

Azami Nakiri becomes an ideological enemy when his Central administration attempts to control what forms of cuisine Tootsuki will permit. Megumi Tadokoro's entire cooking philosophy conflicts with a system that dismisses local, personal or supposedly unsophisticated cuisine as unworthy.
