Maeshima Ryuuji

Maeshima is calm, quiet and strongly motivated by a sense of responsibility. He does not arrive in Tokyo looking for recognition and makes clear that helping people is his reason for joining the operation.

His willingness to cooperate contrasts with the competitive behavior seen among many hunters earlier in the series. By the time of the invasion, the stakes have moved beyond scores and individual missions, and Maeshima responds accordingly.

He is also courageous enough to engage enemies at close range despite the enormous disparity between human and alien forces.

Maeshima is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter who makes effective use of the Gantz suit's enhanced strength, speed and durability. Rather than relying exclusively on firearms, he can defeat alien soldiers through direct physical combat.

He is an experienced hunter and adapts readily to fighting alongside people from other regional Gantz teams. He also uses Gantz weaponry when circumstances require it.

His combat style makes him especially useful in chaotic engagements where civilians or allies are too close for indiscriminate ranged attacks.

Maeshima appears during the Katastrophe after Kei Kurono's duplicate and Reika Shimohira call for experienced Japanese Gantz hunters to join the effort against the invading aliens.

He arrives from Hiroshima and participates in rescue operations, helping the assembled hunters penetrate the alien forces and recover captured humans.

During the final confrontation with Eeva Gund, Maeshima is among the first hunters to intervene when Kurono is in danger, putting himself directly into the fight to save him.

Kei Kurono is the central Tokyo hunter whose call for assistance brings Maeshima into the larger resistance effort. Maeshima later risks himself directly to protect Kurono during the final battle.

Reika Shimohira helps organize the appeal that draws Maeshima and other regional hunters toward Tokyo.

Hyouma Takeda, Mary McClane, Makoto Sekine and Kaiji Yoshikawa are among the other experienced hunters who join the same large-scale effort against the invasion.
