Kei Kurono

Kurono begins as selfish, cynical and resentful. He is disappointed by the person he has become and initially views many people around him through the lens of his own insecurity and sexual frustration.

Combat exposes qualities he has stopped recognizing in himself. Kurono thinks quickly under pressure, improvises effectively and becomes increasingly willing to put himself in danger for other people.

His development is gradual rather than instantaneous. Fear, jealousy and selfish impulses remain part of him, but repeated responsibility for other lives transforms him from an isolated teenager into someone others actively trust to lead them.

Kurono is one of the Tokyo team's most adaptable fighters. He becomes proficient with the X-Gun, X-Shotgun, Y-Gun, Gantz sword and controller, rapidly identifying ways to exploit both the equipment and an enemy's weaknesses.

The Gantz suit enhances his strength, speed, jumping ability and resistance to injury. Kurono learns to use those improvements instinctively and demonstrates exceptional mobility in close combat.

His most important skill is improvisation. Rather than depending on a single fighting style, Kurono studies unfamiliar opponents during battle and changes tactics quickly, a trait that repeatedly allows him to defeat enemies that initially appear overwhelming.

Kurono enters Gantz alongside Katou after the subway accident. His initial response is dominated by confusion and self-preservation, but surviving the early missions gives him an increasing sense of competence.

The return of Shion Izumi and Kurono's relationship with Tae Kojima accelerate that development. When Gantz designates Tae as a target, Kurono openly defies the mission and fights other hunters to protect her.

Kurono eventually becomes the Tokyo team's central leader, training members between missions and repeatedly risking himself to keep them alive. After earning 100 points and leaving Gantz, later events pull him back into the conflict, while the Katastrophe expands the struggle from secret hunts into a threat to humanity itself.

Masaru Katou is Kurono's childhood friend and an important moral influence. Kurono remembers that Masaru Katou once admired him, forcing him to confront how far he has drifted from the courageous child he used to be.

Tae Kojima becomes Kurono's girlfriend after their relationship begins as a dare. He genuinely falls in love with Tae Kojima, and protecting her becomes more important to him than obeying Gantz.

Reika Shimohira admires Kurono's courage and falls in love with him. Kurono ultimately chooses Tae rather than reciprocating Reika's hopes for a relationship.

Kei Kishimoto is Kurono's early infatuation, though she is attracted to Katou instead.

Shion Izumi becomes Kurono's most direct rival among the Tokyo hunters, repeatedly attempting to surpass him in combat and scoring.
