Light Yagami

Light is intelligent, disciplined, charismatic, competitive, and exceptionally confident in his own judgment. Before obtaining the Death Note, he is already bored by what he perceives as a corrupt and stagnant world. Testing the notebook initially horrifies him, but he rapidly reframes the experience as evidence that he has been given the means to reform society.

His strongest quality and greatest weakness are closely connected. Light can analyze complicated systems quickly, anticipate opponents, and maintain several long-term plans at once, but his intelligence reinforces the belief that he deserves authority over everyone else.

He is capable of presenting different versions of himself depending on the audience. To family and classmates, he is polite and responsible. To investigators, he becomes a cooperative and intelligent ally. Privately as Kira, he is increasingly contemptuous toward people who obstruct him.

Light's pride makes challenges difficult to ignore. L's televised provocation succeeds because Light cannot tolerate being publicly called evil by someone who claims he will catch him. This need to defeat people intellectually becomes one of the few consistent ways his opponents can push him into unnecessary risks.

Light's supernatural ability comes entirely from the Death Note. By writing the name of a human whose face he knows, he can cause that person's death. Unless another cause is specified according to the notebook's rules, the victim dies of a heart attack.

The notebook permits far more complicated instructions than simple heart attacks. Light experiments extensively with controlling victims' actions before death, testing limitations involving time, plausibility, information, and causes of death. Those experiments give him a sophisticated understanding of what the notebook can and cannot compel.

Unlike Misa, Light refuses Ryuk's offer of the Shinigami Eyes, because obtaining them would cost half his remaining lifespan. He prefers to acquire hidden names through investigation, manipulation, or another Eye user rather than sacrifice his own longevity.

Light's non-supernatural abilities are equally important. He is academically brilliant, highly athletic, skilled at social manipulation, technologically competent, and capable of maintaining convincing lies under sustained scrutiny. His tennis match with L establishes that his athletic ability is not merely incidental.

He also develops methods of using the Death Note indirectly. Hidden scraps can be carried separately from the main notebook, ownership can be transferred to alter memories, and detailed chains of actions can be constructed around the notebook's rules.

Light finds Ryuk's Death Note outside school and initially assumes its rules are a joke. After testing it on criminals and confirming that it works, he decides to use mass killing to reduce crime and construct a society governed by his own definition of justice.

L's Lind L. Tailor broadcast immediately converts that private campaign into a strategic battle. Light kills the decoy after being challenged, allowing L to identify Kira's region and infer aspects of his personality.

When FBI agents are sent to investigate Japanese police families, Light realizes that his father's access to confidential information has made the Yagamis part of the suspect pool. He subsequently develops the plan that leads to the deaths of Raye Penber and other agents.

Misa's arrival gives him access to another Death Note owner and the Shinigami Eyes. Rather than forming a genuine romantic partnership, Light treats her affection as a resource and carefully manages the threat posed by Rem.

When L detains Misa and increases pressure on Light, Light relinquishes ownership of his notebook and deliberately erases his own memories of being Kira. His plan transfers killing power to Kyosuke Higuchi, allowing the amnesiac Light to work sincerely beside L until the notebook is recovered. Touching it restores his memories, after which he kills Higuchi and resumes his role as Kira.

Light manipulates the circumstances around Misa until Rem concludes that L must die to protect her. Rem writes L and Watari's names in her Death Note and disappears, leaving Light able to assume L's investigative identity while secretly remaining Kira.

Years later, Near and Mello reopen the weaknesses in Light's position. Light appoints Teru Mikami as a proxy Kira and uses Kiyomi Takada as an intermediary, attempting to maintain killings without directly exposing himself.

Mello's kidnapping of Takada forces Mikami to use a hidden real Death Note, giving Near the evidence needed to replace it. At the final warehouse meeting, Mikami's notebook fails, and his decision not to write Light's name exposes Light as Kira.

Soichiro Yagami is Light's father and head of the Japanese task force pursuing Kira. Light respects Soichiro Yagami's integrity but repeatedly exploits his access, trust, and commitment to justice.

Sachiko Yagami is Light's mother. She knows nothing of his Kira identity and sees him primarily as her exceptionally successful son.

Sayu Yagami is Light's younger sister. He displays genuine familial concern toward Sayu Yagami, although his role as Kira creates dangers that eventually reach the family directly.

Ryuk is the Shinigami whose notebook Light finds. Ryuk watches his campaign for entertainment and refuses to become the unconditional ally Light occasionally wishes he had.

L Lawliet is Light's principal rival during the first half of the Kira case. Both recognize the other's extraordinary intelligence, and their forced cooperation at close range creates a relationship built simultaneously on suspicion, competition, and intellectual fascination.

Misa Amane becomes Light's girlfriend publicly and his most useful supernatural ally privately. Misa Amane loves him intensely; Light primarily values her Death Note, Shinigami Eyes, and willingness to obey him.

Rem is the Shinigami attached to Misa. Rem recognizes Light's manipulation and threatens to kill him if Misa dies because of his plans.

Kiyomi Takada is Light's former university acquaintance and later public spokesperson for Kira. [Light uses Kiyomi Takada as an intermediary between himself and Mikami while simultaneously manipulating her romantic feelings.](#spoiler)

Teru Mikami is chosen by Light as a proxy capable of carrying out Kira's judgments independently. Teru Mikami's ideological devotion makes him useful, but his decision to act without Light's authorization during the Takada crisis gives Near the opportunity to uncover the real notebook.

Nate River becomes Light's principal investigative opponent after L. Light initially regards Nate River as inferior to L, a judgment that contributes to his confidence that Near can be defeated.

Mihael Keehl attacks Light's position from outside formal investigative channels. Mihael Keehl's willingness to use kidnapping, organized crime, and direct confrontation repeatedly creates variables Light cannot completely control.
