Near is quiet, patient, analytical, emotionally restrained, and highly confident in his reasoning. He rarely allows provocation to alter his pace and generally prefers gathering enough evidence to make an opponent's options disappear rather than forcing an early confrontation.

His habitual play with toys reflects the way he thinks. Near arranges figures to represent suspects, investigators, Death Notes, and competing theories, converting abstract relationships into physical models. He also constantly twists strands of his hair while reasoning.

Near's confidence can become arrogance. He occasionally speaks dismissively about people whose reasoning he considers poor and initially views Mello partly through the lens of their Wammy's House ranking. Unlike Mello, however, he seldom allows pride to force an immediate risky response.

He respects L but does not simply imitate him. Near recognizes that neither he nor Mello alone fully surpasses their predecessor and eventually understands that the competition between them can produce results neither would achieve independently.

Near possesses exceptional deductive intelligence, information-processing ability, patience, and strategic planning. Like L, he has no supernatural power and must solve the Kira case by learning how the Death Note operates.

He forms the SPK, the Special Provision for Kira, using American resources to investigate the new L and Kira independently of the Japanese task force. This gives him personnel capable of surveillance, infiltration, document analysis, and covert operations.

Near is particularly strong at evaluating competing possibilities without committing too early. He keeps multiple explanations alive until enough evidence exists to eliminate alternatives, making him difficult for Light to manipulate through a single false narrative.

His weaknesses are practical and social. Near is not an especially capable field operative, relies heavily on subordinates, and functions best from controlled headquarters rather than in physical confrontation.

Near's final plan depends on replacing Teru Mikami's Death Note with a counterfeit. The discovery that Mikami had secretly used the real notebook forces Near to revise the plan, and Mello's independent intervention provides the information needed to locate the genuine notebook and substitute it as well.

Near is introduced after Wammy's House must address the succession of L. He and Mello are identified as the leading candidates, but Mello refuses Roger's suggestion that they cooperate if Near is to be treated as the superior successor.

Near later establishes the SPK in the United States and begins investigating Kira independently. His evidence gradually leads him to suspect that the person currently operating under the title L is also Kira.

Communication between Near and the Japanese task force increases that pressure. He reveals doubts about the notebook rules and encourages investigators such as Shuichi Aizawa to reconsider whether Light's earlier exoneration was genuine.

Near identifies Teru Mikami as Kira's proxy and has him placed under surveillance. His plan for the final confrontation centers on ensuring that Mikami believes he possesses a functioning Death Note when he actually carries a copy.

Mello's kidnapping of Takada forces Mikami to use the hidden real Death Note, revealing that Near's first replacement plan would have failed. Near subsequently has the actual notebook copied and replaced.

At the Yellow Box warehouse, Mikami writes the names of everyone present except Light and waits for them to die. When nothing happens, Near reveals the replacement and identifies Light as Kira. Light's attempts to escape the evidence fail, completing the investigation begun by L.

Mihael Keehl is Near's lifelong rival and the other primary candidate to succeed L. Near generally ranks above Mihael Keehl academically, but Mello's willingness to act outside Near's methods becomes essential to solving the case.

L Lawliet is Near's predecessor and the standard against which his detective ability is judged. Near respects L Lawliet enough to acknowledge that neither he nor Mello individually equals him.

Watari founded Wammy's House, where Near is raised and prepared as a potential successor.

Roger Ruvie manages Wammy's House and informs Near and Mello when succession becomes immediately relevant.

Light Yagami becomes Near's principal suspect and intellectual opponent. Near increasingly concludes that Light Yagami, the person publicly operating as L, is simultaneously Kira.

Stephen Gevanni is one of Near's most important SPK agents. Stephen Gevanni conducts the surveillance of Mikami and performs the notebook substitution central to Near's plan.

Anthony Rester and Halle Lidner are other core SPK members who execute Near's plans in the field.

Teru Mikami becomes the key operational link between Near and Kira. Surveillance of Teru Mikami's routine allows Near to construct the final trap.

Shuichi Aizawa becomes an important contact inside the Japanese investigation as his doubts about Light increasingly align with Near's suspicions.
