Mello is brilliant, competitive, proud, impatient, and much more emotionally volatile than Near. He knows that Wammy's House ranks Near above him intellectually, and that fact becomes the central source of his rivalry. Mello would rather take enormous risks to produce results independently than calmly accept being considered second-best.

His emotions are not simply weaknesses. Anger, pride, and urgency push Mello into lines of investigation Near would never pursue himself. He is willing to place his own body in danger, interact directly with criminals, and create unstable situations that force opponents to reveal information.

He is nevertheless capable of careful long-term planning. Mello infiltrates organized crime, builds alliances, researches the Death Note, and anticipates the behavior of both Kira and the investigation. His impulsiveness exists alongside exceptional analytical skill rather than replacing it.

Chocolate is his defining personal habit. He is almost continuously shown eating chocolate bars, creating a deliberate parallel with L's attachment to sweets and Near's use of toys.

Mello possesses no supernatural power for most of his involvement in the case. His primary abilities are intelligence, planning, psychological pressure, criminal networking, and willingness to take risks that conventional investigators cannot.

His upbringing at Wammy's House gives him the intellectual foundation expected of an L successor. He can analyze complex information quickly, identify weaknesses in institutional security, infer the strategic value of the Death Note, and plan around opponents who already know they are being hunted.

Mello is also much more operationally aggressive than Near. He uses firearms, explosives, kidnapping, and criminal organizations as tools. His willingness to physically enter dangerous environments makes him capable of acquiring information unavailable through remote investigation.

Mello eventually learns enough of the Death Note's rules to understand that some of the rules written in the notebook are fraudulent. This becomes critical because identifying the false thirteen-day rule is one route toward exposing the scheme that cleared Light and Misa during the original investigation.

Mello is introduced after the original Kira investigation undergoes a major change and attention turns toward L's possible successors at Wammy's House. Near and Mello are identified as the two leading candidates, but neither accepts the idea of working comfortably as the other's subordinate.

Near chooses to cooperate with government resources, while Mello leaves and eventually associates himself with the Mafia. His first major objective is acquiring a Death Note, which he attempts by kidnapping people close enough to the Japanese investigation to force an exchange.

Mello's group kidnaps Sayu Yagami and successfully obtains the Death Note held by the Japanese task force. This gives him direct access to the notebook's rules and forces Light, now operating as the new L, to confront an opponent willing to target his own family.

During the assault on Mello's base, Mello triggers an explosion to escape. He survives but receives severe burns on the left side of his face, leaving the scar that defines his later appearance.

Mello's investigation subsequently overlaps more directly with Near's. Although neither abandons their rivalry, both understand that Kira benefits from their separation.

Mello's final independent move is the kidnapping of Kiyomi Takada. The incident forces both Takada and Teru Mikami into actions they had not planned, exposing a crucial weakness in Light's strategy. Near later recognizes that Mello's intervention supplied the final piece needed to ensure Kira could be caught.

Nate River is Mello's lifelong rival and fellow candidate to succeed L. Nate River's superior ranking at Wammy's House drives much of Mello's resentment, but their rivalry also pushes both toward achievements neither may have reached alone.

L Lawliet is Mello's predecessor and the detective whose position he wants to inherit. Mello never develops an ordinary mentor relationship with L Lawliet, but L's reputation defines the standard against which his intelligence is measured.

Watari founded Wammy's House and created the environment in which Mello and Near were raised as possible successors to L.

Matt is Mello's friend from Wammy's House and later his closest operational accomplice. Matt assists with surveillance and the kidnapping operation involving Takada.

Light Yagami becomes Mello's principal unseen adversary as the Kira case continues. Mello increasingly suspects that the current L and Kira are connected and attacks the institutions surrounding Light rather than confronting him through formal police channels.

Soichiro Yagami leads the Japanese assault on Mello's Mafia base. [After making the Shinigami Eye deal, Soichiro Yagami sees Mello's true name, Mihael Keehl, but is unable to write it before the confrontation collapses.](#spoiler)

Kiyomi Takada becomes the target of Mello's final kidnapping. The pressure created by that action forces Takada and Mikami to deviate from Light's carefully controlled plan.
