Leorio Paradinight

Leorio grows up with the experience that medicine can save a life while poverty can still place that medicine out of reach. A childhood friend contracts a disease that can be treated, but Leorio cannot afford the necessary operation. His friend dies, leaving Leorio furious at a system in which whether someone survives can depend on money. The experience gives him the ambition to become a doctor capable of treating people without charging them. Nippon TV's official profile describes this loss directly and identifies free medical treatment for children suffering from similar illnesses as the goal behind his career.

Medical education itself is expensive, however, and Leorio sees a Hunter License as a way of obtaining the money and opportunities necessary to pursue it. When he first meets Kurapika and Gon aboard the ship carrying applicants toward the Hunter Exam, he openly talks about wealth. Kurapika interprets the attitude as crude greed, and the two immediately clash. Only later does Leorio explain that money is not an end in itself for him: without it, the medical education and treatment he values are inaccessible.

That motivation distinguishes Leorio from many applicants seeking prestige, rare discoveries or personal power. He wants access. A professional Hunter can travel more freely, obtain restricted information, enter otherwise inaccessible locations and make money unavailable to an ordinary young man. The license is therefore an instrument supporting his medical ambition rather than his ultimate profession.

Leorio's friendship with Gon and Kurapika forms during the journey to the examination site. Their early disagreements are severe enough that Kurapika and Leorio nearly fight, but shared danger quickly reveals that both will risk themselves for other people. By the time they reach the exam proper, the three are already functioning as companions rather than simply applicants traveling in the same direction. Nippon TV's episode material consistently groups Gon, Leorio and Kurapika together during these earliest stages.

The Hunter Exam exposes both Leorio's strengths and his limitations. He does not possess Gon's extraordinary natural senses, Killua's assassin training or Kurapika's analytical composure, but he has considerable endurance and refuses to abandon companions simply because helping them may jeopardize his own progress.

During Trick Tower, his impulsiveness causes difficulties during the group's majority-rule challenges. He is particularly susceptible to emotional manipulation and can make poor decisions when pride becomes involved. At the same time, he continues advancing through tests designed to eliminate physically and psychologically weaker applicants.

The fourth phase on Zevil Island places him in direct danger while pursuing the badge needed to qualify. Gon and Kurapika ultimately help him deal with the situation involving Ponzu and the snake-filled cave, another early example of the group's success depending on cooperation rather than individual performance. Nippon TV's official episode synopsis describes Gon and Kurapika joining Leorio to formulate a plan for obtaining Ponzu's badge after she becomes his assigned target.

Leorio reaches the final examination and eventually becomes a licensed Hunter. His route to qualification differs sharply from Killua's: Leorio succeeds despite openly recognizing that several of the remaining applicants are stronger fighters than he is.

When Killua leaves after the examination, Leorio accompanies Gon and Kurapika to the Zoldyck estate. The journey is not relevant to Leorio's medical career, but he goes because retrieving their new friend matters to him. The group encounters the enormous Testing Gate and the Zoldyck family's security personnel before eventually reuniting with Killua. Nippon TV's account of the arc presents Leorio as part of the group waiting for Killua and refusing simply to leave without him.

After the group separates, Leorio begins focusing seriously on medical studies. Unlike Gon and Killua, he does not make combat training and Nen development his immediate priority. His absence from Heaven's Arena reflects a choice established from the beginning: becoming a Hunter was supposed to help him become a doctor, not replace that goal.

Leorio returns to Yorknew City when the four friends arrange to reunite there. He helps Gon and Killua raise money and participates in their efforts around the auction, but Kurapika's conflict with the Phantom Troupe places the others in progressively greater danger. Official episode material shows Leorio working with Gon and Killua as they try to accumulate the money needed for Greed Island.

His role during Yorknew remains predominantly supportive. Leorio does not possess the specialized Nen abilities Kurapika has developed for confronting the Phantom Troupe, and inserting himself into direct combat would provide little practical benefit. Instead, he helps where his existing skills and connections are useful.

After Yorknew, Leorio returns to his studies while Gon and Killua pursue Greed Island and later become involved in the Chimera Ant crisis. His comparatively ordinary academic path means long stretches of the story pass without him, but those absences are consistent with his original objective rather than evidence that he has abandoned the group.

The Chairman Election brings him back into major narrative prominence. Gon has been left in catastrophic condition following the Chimera Ant operation, and Leorio arrives furious that Ging has apparently failed to visit his son.

When Leorio confronts Ging Freecss publicly, he demands to know why Ging has not gone to Gon. Ging's dismissive attitude pushes him beyond restraint, and Leorio uses his developing Nen ability to strike him remotely across the room.

The assembled Hunters respond enthusiastically. Leorio's anger expresses what many people present feel about Ging, and the episode unexpectedly turns a medical student with little political ambition into a viable candidate for chairman.

He progresses through repeated rounds of the election despite never having planned to lead the Association. By the eighth ballot, Leorio actually finishes first, with Pariston Hill second, although he lacks the absolute majority needed to win immediately. Nippon TV's official synopsis confirms this result.

His candidacy remains centered on Gon rather than institutional ambition. Leorio makes clear that he would rather see his friend recover than become chairman, and his willingness to say exactly what he believes becomes the source of his popularity. VIZ likewise describes him as the election's unexpected dark-horse candidate.

Following the election, Leorio is invited to fill one of the vacant positions among the Hunter Association's Zodiacs. He receives the codename Boar and joins the group preparing for the expedition associated with the Dark Continent.

His medical background determines his place within the expedition structure. Rather than becoming a frontline exploration specialist, Leorio joins the medical and scientific side of the operation and works under Cheadle Yorkshire.

When the Black Whale begins its voyage, Leorio works in the medical facility on the ship's third deck. His role places him away from the succession conflict involving Kurapika, but it advances the medical career that has motivated him since his introduction.

Leorio is outspoken, emotional and quick to anger. He rarely maintains the carefully controlled demeanor associated with Kurapika and is much more likely to complain openly when circumstances are unfair, irritating or absurd. His reactions make him easy to read and difficult to manipulate through subtle social expectations.

His introduction deliberately creates an unfavorable first impression. Leorio talks extensively about money and treats financial success as something worth pursuing without apology. Because Kurapika speaks from a more idealistic position, their argument initially makes Leorio appear materialistic.

The explanation behind that attitude reverses the context without completely changing his personality. Leorio genuinely believes money matters. His friend's death taught him that ideals have limited practical value when medical treatment costs more than a patient can pay.

He therefore rejects romantic claims that money is unimportant. Food, education, medicine, transportation and opportunity all require resources. His solution is not to become indifferent to money but to obtain enough that he can stop demanding it from people who need his help.

Leorio has a strong sense of justice, though it is expressed emotionally rather than philosophically. He becomes furious when powerful people dismiss those who depend on them, particularly when the issue involves illness, abandonment or exploitation.

His compassion often appears through anger. Where Gon might respond to someone's suffering with immediate curiosity and assistance, Leorio frequently responds by becoming enraged at the person or institution responsible for allowing it to happen.

That pattern reaches its clearest expression during the Chairman Election. His confrontation with Ging is not calculated political theater. Leorio genuinely cannot tolerate the idea that Gon's father is sitting comfortably among other Hunters while Gon is hospitalized.

He is also extremely loyal. Once Leorio accepts someone as a friend, his own convenience becomes secondary. His trip to the Zoldyck estate, participation in Yorknew and return during Gon's hospitalization all emerge from that same instinct.

This loyalty gives Leorio a protective, older-brother quality within the original quartet. He frequently worries about Gon and Killua's dangerous behavior despite lacking the power to physically prevent them from taking risks.

His apparent maturity is somewhat misleading. Leorio looks considerably older than Gon, Killua and Kurapika and dresses like an adult professional, but he is only nineteen when introduced. Nippon TV's official profile specifically jokes about the contrast between his mature appearance and surprisingly young age.

He can consequently be as immature as the younger members of the group. Leorio is susceptible to pride, attractive women, gambling-like challenges and provocations that more disciplined characters recognize as obvious traps.

His confrontation with the prisoners in Trick Tower demonstrates this weakness. A challenge can become personal very quickly for him, after which proving himself may matter more than calculating the safest outcome.

Leorio is nevertheless socially capable in ways Gon and Killua often are not. His medical education, familiarity with ordinary society and comfort speaking to adults give him useful interpersonal skills outside combat situations.

He also possesses considerable charisma without intentionally cultivating it. The Chairman Election shows that his blunt sincerity can move large groups precisely because he lacks the rehearsed language of an institutional politician.

Leorio does not pretend to understand every crisis. When he is frightened, angry or confused, the people around him generally know. That transparency becomes valuable in a setting filled with Hunters who conceal motives behind elaborate strategies.

His ambitions remain unusually grounded. He does not want to become the strongest Hunter, discover a legendary location or dominate the Association. He wants the qualifications necessary to practice medicine and the resources necessary to help patients.

Becoming a Zodiac therefore does not replace his original identity. Even after entering one of the Hunter Association's most prestigious groups, Leorio continues prioritizing medical training and joins the expedition in a healthcare capacity rather than pursuing status for its own sake.

Leorio is exceptionally tall, standing 193 cm and weighing 85 kg according to established profile material. Despite being only nineteen at his introduction, his height, facial structure, formal clothes and glasses make him appear substantially older. His profile measurements are consistently reproduced from official character data.

He has short black hair and brown eyes in the 2011 anime adaptation. His hair is kept relatively neat, reinforcing his more conventional appearance when placed beside Gon's spiky hairstyle, Killua's white hair or Kurapika's distinctive blond bob.

Leorio almost always wears dark business attire during the early series: a suit, white shirt, tie and dark shoes. The outfit is unusual for the Hunter Exam, where other candidates generally dress for athletic movement or combat.

His round sunglasses are among his most recognizable accessories. They contribute significantly to the impression that he is an older businessman rather than a teenage medical student.

Leorio's formal clothing also reflects his aspirations. Even before actually becoming a doctor, he presents himself as someone preparing for adult professional life.

His appearance creates recurring misunderstandings about his age. Characters commonly assume he is older, and Leorio is sensitive about comments implying that he looks middle-aged.

The 1999 anime gives him somewhat different coloring, particularly in his eyes and hair, but preserves the same fundamental design: tall build, suit, dark glasses and prominent facial features.

Although he is less visibly muscular than fighters such as Hisoka or Uvogin, Leorio possesses considerable physical strength. The Hunter Exam and Zoldyck estate material establish that his body is capable of far more than his office-worker appearance suggests.

Later appearances change his fundamental design very little. Even after developing Nen and entering higher levels of the Hunter Association, he continues to look more like a young doctor or businessman than a conventional battle-oriented Hunter.

Leorio is physically much stronger than his professional appearance suggests. He survives the Hunter Exam's extreme endurance challenges, keeps pace with applicants over extended distances and endures conditions that eliminate large numbers of otherwise capable candidates.

His greatest disadvantage in the original group is comparative rather than absolute. Gon has extraordinary natural physical gifts, Killua has been trained as an assassin since childhood and Kurapika later constructs abilities specifically intended for combat against the Phantom Troupe.

Leorio instead divides his time between becoming a Hunter and becoming a physician. He consequently receives much less combat training than his companions.

His raw courage partly compensates for this gap. Leorio is willing to stand against opponents he knows are stronger when another person's welfare is involved, even though he rarely possesses a realistic plan for winning such confrontations.

He also shows reasonable practical intelligence. Although his temper can sabotage him during contests, Leorio can understand complicated situations and contribute to group problem-solving when emotionally calm.

His medical education becomes increasingly important as the series progresses. Anatomy and physiology are not merely career details; they appear to shape the way he develops Nen.

Leorio's Nen affinity is Emission. Emission allows a user to separate aura from the body while maintaining its effectiveness at a distance.

He develops Nen much later than Gon, Killua and Kurapika from the audience's perspective. By Yorknew, Gon realizes that Leorio has learned basic aura control, but Leorio has not devoted himself to advanced combat applications with the same intensity as his friends.

His most visible Nen demonstration occurs during the Chairman Election. Furious with Ging, Leorio punches a nearby surface and causes an aura-based fist to emerge remotely beside Ging, striking him in the face.

The attack immediately demonstrates why Emission suits him. The force of the original punch is transferred through aura and reproduced at a different location rather than requiring Leorio to physically reach his opponent.

Its apparently simple function hides a more sophisticated design. Leorio is studying medicine, and the later manga indicates that his ability was developed with medical applications in mind rather than simply as a long-range fighting technique.

Ging later reproduces Leorio's ability after having been struck by it. He explains that he has a talent for imitating straightforward striking abilities after experiencing them firsthand, allowing the mechanics behind Leorio's Hatsu to be examined in greater detail.

The technique sends aura through a surface before producing an effect at another point. Ging demonstrates that the underlying principle can be used to transmit pulses through solid material, effectively probing spaces or bodies beyond direct sight.

Ging interprets the ability as something naturally suited to Leorio's medical ambitions. Aura pulses could be used in a manner analogous to ultrasound or palpation, allowing abnormalities inside a body to be located without immediately cutting the patient open.

He further demonstrates an offensive extension capable of sending destructive aura through surrounding surfaces. These applications belong to Ging's interpretation and imitation of Leorio's basic technique, so they should not automatically be treated as techniques Leorio himself has already mastered.

Leorio's development illustrates the personal nature of Nen abilities. Whereas Gon's Jajanken reflects straightforward competition and Kurapika's chains embody restriction and obligation, Leorio appears to have designed his Hatsu around the physical problems encountered by a doctor.

The result is an ability capable of combat without being conceived primarily for fighting. Its range and interaction with solid surfaces give Leorio possibilities for diagnosis, surgery and remote physical intervention.

His exact upper limits remain largely unknown because the manga has shown very little of his formal Nen training or serious combat after the Chairman Election.

That lack of demonstration should not be confused with lack of potential. Ging regards the ability with enough interest to analyze and reproduce its underlying mechanism, suggesting that Leorio's approach to Nen is considerably more sophisticated than the single public punch initially makes it appear.

Leorio has relatively few formally established Nen techniques compared with Gon, Kurapika or Hisoka. His principal ability has not been given a distinct canonical attack name in the manga, so descriptive labels such as "Remote Punch" are commonly used for convenience rather than as confirmed technique names.

Remote Aura Punch: Leorio punches a surface and sends aura through it, causing an aura-formed fist to emerge from another point and reproduce the strike at a distance. He first publicly demonstrates the technique against Ging Freecss during the Chairman Election.

The attack is an application of Emission, Leorio's Nen affinity. Its path through a surface makes it different from simply firing a conventional aura projectile directly at a target.

Remote Aura Transmission: Ging's analysis shows that the same principle can transmit aura through solid matter before releasing it elsewhere. The technique's structure is particularly useful when the user cannot directly reach the intended target.

Diagnostic Aura Pulses: When reproducing and extending Leorio's ability, Ging sends extremely small pulses through a surface and reads their responses. He associates the principle with the kind of non-invasive examination useful to a doctor. This is an inferred medical application of Leorio's Hatsu rather than a separately named technique Leorio has explicitly performed on-panel.

Internal Remote Strike: Ging demonstrates that the underlying concept can be weaponized by transmitting an emitted attack through surrounding material before having it emerge close to an enemy. Because this is Ging's copied application, it should not be listed as a confirmed personal move in Leorio's demonstrated repertoire.

Before developing Nen, Leorio also carries a knife during the Hunter Exam. He is willing to draw it during his early confrontation with Kurapika, although weapon-based combat never becomes an important part of his later fighting style.

Gon Freecss becomes one of Leorio's closest friends almost immediately after they meet aboard the ship bound for the Hunter Exam. Leorio Paradinight initially appears much more cynical than Gon Freecss, but Gon's straightforward belief in people repeatedly cuts through Leorio's defensive behavior.

Gon Freecss also brings out Leorio's protective instincts. Even though Leorio Paradinight knows Gon is physically exceptional, he continues thinking of him as a child who should not casually endanger himself.

Their friendship becomes especially visible during the Chairman Election. Leorio Paradinight has been occupied with medical studies while Gon is involved in the Chimera Ant operation, but learning how badly his friend has been injured immediately becomes more important than Association politics.

When Ging Freecss appears unwilling to visit his hospitalized son, Leorio Paradinight publicly confronts him. The resulting punch turns Leorio into an election favorite precisely because his anger is transparently rooted in concern for Gon Freecss.

Kurapika begins as Leorio's antagonist before becoming one of his closest friends. Leorio Paradinight's open obsession with money disgusts Kurapika, while Kurapika's formal and judgmental attitude infuriates Leorio.

The argument changes once Leorio Paradinight explains the friend he lost and his intention to become a doctor. Kurapika recognizes that Leorio's fixation on money comes from firsthand knowledge of what poverty can cost.

Their personalities continue to clash even after becoming friends. Kurapika is controlled and analytical, whereas Leorio Paradinight frequently acts on emotion.

That difference becomes useful rather than merely antagonistic. Leorio Paradinight can challenge Kurapika's tendency to isolate himself, while Kurapika provides restraint when Leorio becomes impulsive.

During Yorknew, Leorio Paradinight is increasingly concerned about the path Kurapika has chosen against the Phantom Troupe. He cannot remove Kurapika's desire for revenge, but his presence reinforces that the last Kurta has relationships outside that vendetta.

[Their paths diverge sharply afterward. Kurapika enters progressively more dangerous criminal and political conflicts while Leorio Paradinight pursues medicine, but both eventually become connected to the Dark Continent expedition through the Zodiacs.](#spoiler)

Killua Zoldyck meets Leorio during the Hunter Exam. Their relationship is less central than either character's friendship with Gon, but Leorio Paradinight quickly comes to regard Killua as part of the same group.

When Killua Zoldyck returns to his family after the examination, Leorio Paradinight travels with Gon and Kurapika to the Zoldyck estate rather than accepting that Killua has simply chosen to abandon them.

Killua Zoldyck often has better combat instincts than Leorio despite being much younger. Leorio Paradinight does not particularly enjoy having that difference demonstrated, but he respects Killua's abilities.

During the crisis surrounding Gon's condition, Killua Zoldyck takes direct responsibility for finding a means to heal him, while Leorio Paradinight uses the Hunter Association election as a platform to demand action from adults who should be helping.

Ging Freecss becomes the target of one of Leorio's most famous confrontations. Leorio Paradinight has little patience for Ging's detached attitude toward his critically ill son and asks directly why he has not gone to see Gon.

When Ging Freecss gives an answer Leorio finds unacceptable, Leorio Paradinight strikes him with his remote Nen punch. The crowd's reaction transforms the confrontation into a major election moment.

Interestingly, Ging Freecss does not appear to resent him for the attack. Ging later analyzes and reproduces Leorio's ability, commenting on the thought behind its design and recognizing its potential medical application.

Pariston Hill becomes Leorio's principal political opponent during the Chairman Election even though Leorio Paradinight has little personal interest in Association politics. Pariston recognizes that Leorio's sincerity is attracting voters and incorporates that unexpected development into his own plans.

Leorio Paradinight ultimately reaches the final stage of the election alongside Pariston Hill. The contrast between them is pronounced: Pariston understands institutional manipulation intimately, while Leorio openly admits that helping Gon concerns him more than winning office.

Cheadle Yorkshire initially appears as one of the serious contenders in the Chairman Election. Leorio Paradinight's sudden popularity disrupts the assumptions made by the established Zodiacs about how the election will develop.

Isaac Netero encounters Leorio during the Hunter Exam and serves as chairman when he receives his Hunter License. Leorio Paradinight does not develop the personal relationship with Netero that Gon eventually does, but the Association structure Netero leaves behind later pulls Leorio into national-scale events.

Melody meets Leorio through their mutual connection to Kurapika during Yorknew. Leorio Paradinight is not as closely associated with Melody as Kurapika is, but they occupy the same network of allies trying to keep Kurapika from being consumed by his conflict with the Phantom Troupe.

Hisoka Morow is one of the overwhelming threats Leorio encounters during the Hunter Exam. Leorio Paradinight is willing to confront Hisoka despite the enormous difference in ability, illustrating both his courage and his tendency to act before calculating whether he can win.

Illumi Zoldyck, initially disguised as Gittarackur, becomes relevant to Leorio through Killua. Leorio Paradinight is appalled by the psychological pressure Illumi places on his younger brother and sides unambiguously with Killua's right to choose his own friends.

The unnamed childhood friend Leorio loses before the story remains the most important relationship in his backstory. Because the manga does not provide a canonical name for him, the friend is defined through the impact his loss has on Leorio rather than an extended characterization.

That death turns medicine from a desirable profession into a moral necessity for Leorio. He does not want another child to die because the people around them cannot afford treatment.

Leorio enters the Hunter Exam as one of the four characters who define the series' original ensemble. Gon supplies the central quest, Killua brings the assassin world into the story, Kurapika carries the conflict with the Phantom Troupe, and Leorio represents a comparatively ordinary professional aspiration within an extraordinary setting.

His early role frequently provides social grounding. Gon has grown up on an isolated island, Killua comes from an assassin dynasty and Kurapika belongs to a secluded clan. Leorio is the character most openly preoccupied with familiar problems such as tuition, employment and medical costs.

Those concerns do not make his ambition less serious. In a setting where Hunters chase mythical creatures and lost civilizations, Leorio's objective asks what the value of extraordinary privilege is if it cannot improve an ordinary person's life.

During the Hunter Exam, he also provides a different model of qualification. Leorio is not the strongest member of the eventual quartet, yet the examination is designed to measure more than combat ability.

His endurance, determination and willingness to keep moving despite obvious disadvantages allow him to survive the same process as prodigies.

The Zoldyck Family arc reinforces his role as a friend rather than a combat specialist. Leorio joins the effort to retrieve Killua because leaving someone behind contradicts the bonds formed during the examination.

He becomes less central during Heaven's Arena because pursuing martial advancement is not his goal. The absence is important: Leorio actually follows through on the medical career he claimed the Hunter License would support.

Yorknew brings the original four back into contact, but Kurapika's revenge becomes the dominant plot. Leorio's function is primarily logistical and emotional, illustrating how far Kurapika has moved from the relatively ordinary aspirations of their Hunter Exam group.

His long absence during Greed Island and the Chimera Ant arc similarly follows the internal logic of his life. Medical school demands time, and Leorio is not wandering the world in search of combat encounters.

The Chairman Election uses that absence effectively. When Leorio reappears, his emotional reaction to Gon's condition reflects the perspective of a friend who was not present to normalize the escalating risks Gon and Killua had been taking.

His punch against Ging instantly reestablishes him as a major character. Rather than returning through a spectacular training reveal or new enemy, Leorio becomes important by expressing outrage on Gon's behalf.

The election then expands his social importance far beyond his combat importance. Experienced Hunters respond to his sincerity and willingness to say what the Association's leadership has failed to say.

By the eighth round, Leorio actually leads the vote, with Pariston behind him, though neither possesses the majority necessary to conclude the election. Nippon TV documents the result directly, while VIZ describes Leorio as the election's unexpected dark-horse contender.

His success demonstrates a kind of ability the series does not measure through Nen. Leorio can inspire trust because people believe that what he says corresponds with what he genuinely feels.

The post-anime manga turns that accidental political visibility into formal institutional importance. Leorio is invited into the Zodiacs and takes the Boar position vacated during the reorganization surrounding the Dark Continent expedition.

Rather than abandoning medicine for Association leadership, he uses the new opportunity to advance in precisely the field that originally motivated him. The expedition places his medical training inside one of the largest Hunter operations ever attempted.

On the Black Whale, Leorio works in the third-deck medical facility while the succession contest unfolds elsewhere on the ship. His relative distance from Kurapika's current crisis leaves open the possibility that their paths may intersect again as the voyage develops.

Leorio begins by trying to control how strangers perceive him. He announces that he wants money and initially allows people to believe greed is sufficient explanation for his ambition.

That posture protects something more painful. Admitting that he could not save his friend means admitting both emotional vulnerability and powerlessness, two things Leorio strongly dislikes displaying.

His argument with Kurapika forces the distinction into the open. Money matters because Leorio has already watched the absence of it contribute to a preventable death.

The Hunter Exam then teaches him that independence does not require rejecting assistance. Leorio repeatedly advances because Gon, Kurapika and later Killua are willing to cooperate with him.

His friendship with the other three becomes one of the few aspects of his life that consistently overrides pride. Leorio may complain, argue or threaten, but when a friend faces genuine danger, he rarely needs persuasion to become involved.

The Zoldyck estate visit is an early example. He has already achieved the Hunter License he needs for his own future, yet immediately postpones personal plans because Killua's situation concerns the group.

His Nen ability reinforces the continuity. The remote punch initially appears to be a combat technique because the first significant use is punching Ging.

Ging's later analysis reveals that the underlying structure is closely aligned with medical work. Leorio has not abandoned becoming a doctor in order to learn Nen; he has begun shaping Nen around becoming a better doctor.

His invitation to the Zodiacs follows the same pattern. Institutional prestige arrives as a consequence of his character rather than something he actively chases.

Even after receiving that position, he chooses the medical division and continues his studies under highly experienced professionals. His development therefore moves consistently toward the promise created by his childhood loss rather than away from it.
