Kyouko Honda

Kyoko is passionate, blunt and intensely loyal. During adolescence, anger becomes her primary means of expressing pain, and she reacts to rejection by embracing an increasingly violent delinquent identity.

Her relationship with Katsuya allows a more vulnerable side to emerge. Kyoko is capable of admitting that beneath her hostility she desperately wants to be needed and fears being abandoned.

As a mother, she retains her toughness but directs it toward protecting and encouraging Tooru. Her advice emphasizes accepting people's flaws, recognizing loneliness and continuing to care even when relationships are difficult.

Kyoko has no supernatural abilities. During her delinquent years she is a formidable street fighter and motorcycle rider whose reputation spreads among younger delinquents.

Her nickname, the Crimson Butterfly, is associated with the image of her motorcycle's red tail light moving through the night.

Kyoko's most lasting influence is personal rather than physical. The lessons she gives Tooru continue shaping how her daughter approaches people long after individual conversations have ended.

Kyoko is present from the beginning through Tooru's memories, photographs and stories. Understanding the mother Tooru idealizes gradually requires understanding the angry teenager Kyoko once was.

Her history with Arisa reveals how far that influence extends beyond her daughter. Kyoko recognizes the younger girl's delinquency without condemning her and gives Arisa a living example that leaving such a life is possible.

Kyoko's past with Katsuya also explains Tooru's childhood. After Katsuya dies, Kyoko falls into profound grief and briefly abandons Tooru before returning and committing herself to raising her daughter. Years later, Kyoko is killed in a traffic accident, leaving Tooru alone at the beginning of the main story.

Tooru Honda is Kyoko's daughter and the center of her adult life. Kyoko raises Tooru Honda with affection and honesty, and her advice becomes a foundation for Tooru's worldview.

Katsuya Honda recognizes Kyoko's loneliness while she is still a delinquent and later becomes her husband. His death devastates Kyoko and temporarily leaves her unable to function as Tooru's parent.

Arisa Uotani idolizes the legend of the Crimson Butterfly before meeting Kyoko in person. Kyoko becomes a mentor-like figure who helps Arisa Uotani leave gang life and reconnect with the possibility of an ordinary future.

Kyou Souma has an important connection to Kyoko that initially remains outside Tooru's knowledge. Kyou met Kyoko before her death and carries intense guilt over being present at the traffic accident in which she was killed.
