Yachiru Kusajishi

Yachiru is cheerful, impulsive and almost entirely fearless. She treats the fearsome Kenpachi with casual affection, calls him “Ken-chan” and remains delighted rather than frightened when his battles become violent. Her confidence in his victory is virtually absolute.

She gives nicknames to nearly everyone, eats large quantities of sweets and uses the Shinigami Women’s Association’s resources for elaborate personal projects. Her poor sense of direction frequently leads Kenpachi astray even though he continues relying on her navigation. She can also become intimidating when insulted or when someone threatens her friends, releasing spiritual pressure that takes the visual form of an enormous angry face.

Yachiru’s childishness does not prevent her from exercising authority. Members of the Eleventh Division fear her temper, and she manages the Women’s Association with enough influence to occupy other divisions’ property, organize activities and requisition supplies.

Yachiru possesses substantial spiritual power and enough speed to move between locations before experienced Shinigami can follow her. She carries her Zanpakuto by a cord rather than wearing it conventionally and often strikes while the weapon remains sheathed.

Sanpo Kenju manifests two creatures alongside her. One attacks immediately before her own sword reaches its target, while the other follows immediately afterward. The three staggered strikes make evasion extremely difficult: even an opponent who misjudges or avoids Yachiru’s visible swing can still be hit by one of the accompanying beasts.

Her instinctive reactions allow her to strike Guenael Lee even when his Vanishing Point removes him from sight, memory and conscious awareness. This unusual perception reflects a combat ability far beyond what her behavior and appearance suggest.

Yachiru is ultimately confirmed to be an aspect of Nozarashi—specifically the form associated with Kenpachi’s Bankai—who acquired Shinigami-like individuality and powers after he named her. Her Sanpo Kenju abilities therefore do not operate like those of an ordinary independent Zanpakuto wielder.

Yachiru accompanies Kenpachi during the ryoka invasion and watches his battle with Ichigo. Afterward, she helps guide Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, Uryu Ishida and Ganju Shiba toward the execution grounds, though her unreliable directions complicate the journey.

She later travels to Hueco Mundo with Kenpachi and the invading captains, observing his battles while remaining confident that no opponent can defeat him. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, she assists Isane Kotetsu with wounded Shinigami and fights Guenael, demonstrating Sanpo Kenju for the first time.

After Kenpachi hears Nozarashi’s name and releases his Shikai, Yachiru disappears, leaving only her lieutenant’s badge. She later appears to him during the battle with Gerard Valkyrie, releases more of his power and enables his Bankai transformation.

Kenpachi Zaraki — Yachiru’s captain, adoptive father and constant companion. She is also an aspect of his Zanpakuto, Nozarashi, given independent form through his naming of her.

Retsu Unohana — The former Kenpachi whose original name, Yachiru, inspires the name Kenpachi gives the infant he finds in Kusajishi.

Ikkaku Madarame — A senior Eleventh Division officer whom Yachiru habitually calls “Baldy” and treats as an older subordinate.

Yumichika Ayasegawa — An Eleventh Division officer and long-term companion within Kenpachi’s group.

Byakuya Kuchiki — A captain whose estate Yachiru repeatedly appropriates for secret Women’s Association activities.

Isane Kotetsu — A fellow lieutenant whom Yachiru assists during the second Wandenreich invasion.

Guenael Lee — The Quincy construct against whom Yachiru reveals Sanpo Kenju.
