Background
Background
Julius’s publicly known history begins with his service in the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights. He joined the Grey Deer squad and rose through its ranks before becoming captain. His extraordinary Time Magic, broad knowledge, and ability to evaluate other mages eventually carried him to the office of Wizard King, the highest military position in the kingdom.
As a Grey Deer captain, Julius actively sought people whose magic or circumstances set them apart. He encountered Yami, a shipwrecked foreigner ostracized because of his appearance and unusual Dark Magic, and invited him into the Magic Knights. Julius also helped Yami learn the Clover Kingdom’s language. He later recruited Morgen Faust and recognized the potential of William, whose scarred face and difficult upbringing had left him isolated.
Julius’s political outlook was strongly affected by Zara Ideale, the first commoner admitted to the Magic Knights. Zara’s pride in protecting ordinary citizens impressed Julius, while the discrimination and hostility directed at him exposed how thoroughly noble privilege shaped the institution. After Zara was murdered by fellow Magic Knights who resented his status, Julius committed himself more fully to becoming Wizard King and changing the kingdom from the top.
His ascent did not eliminate the nobility’s influence, but it allowed him to reward merit more openly. Julius encouraged captains to recruit unusual candidates, supported the Star Awards system as a public measure of achievement, and treated commoners such as Asta and Yuno as legitimate contenders for advancement.
Julius’s true origin is revealed much later. He shares a body with Lucius Zogratis, the eldest member of the Zogratis family, and remains unaware of the other soul for most of his life. Their body became host to Astaroth, the devil associated with Time Magic; Lucius concealed his presence while Julius established himself in the Clover Kingdom.
Personality
Personality
Julius displays an almost childlike enthusiasm for magic. He abandons official duties to explore the kingdom, adopts disguises to avoid recognition, and becomes visibly excited whenever he encounters an unfamiliar attribute or spell. Rank and decorum disappear from his attention when a new magical phenomenon is available to study.
This behavior regularly frustrates Marx Francois, who must manage the Wizard King’s schedule and locate him when he wanders away. Julius understands that his disappearances create administrative problems, but curiosity repeatedly wins. His transformations let him circulate among ordinary citizens without the restrictions imposed by his office.
In serious situations, that scattered enthusiasm gives way to sharp judgment. Julius can assess spells quickly, identify an opponent’s habits, and make strategic decisions while fighting at extreme speed. His calm demeanor rarely breaks, even when facing an enemy whose magic is specifically suited to contesting his own.
Julius rejects the belief that noble birth determines worth. He takes an immediate interest in Asta’s Anti Magic and Yuno’s four-leaf grimoire without treating either boy’s rural upbringing as disqualifying. His standard for becoming Wizard King is concrete achievement: a candidate must produce results, gain the people’s trust, and prove strong enough to protect the kingdom.
His inclusiveness is not passive. Julius deliberately recruits foreigners, commoners, and socially isolated mages because he wants the Magic Knights to reflect a broader range of the kingdom’s people. He nevertheless operates within a deeply unequal political system, and his reforms remain gradual rather than revolutionary.
Appearance
Appearance

As an adult, Julius is a tall man with short, untidy blond hair and purple eyes. A blue six-pointed star appears on the left side of his forehead. The mark represents stored time and is connected to the reserves he accumulates through his magic.
His formal clothing reflects his status as Wizard King. Julius wears a high-collared white shirt decorated with gold and purple designs, brown trousers, and tall boots. Black fur trims several parts of the outfit, while medals and gold ornaments emphasize his military office.
A long red robe covers much of his body. White fur surrounds its upper portion, and the garment has a single full sleeve on the right. During his earlier career with the Grey Deer, Julius wore the squad’s mantle over a simpler robe.
Julius frequently adopts other appearances through Transformation Magic. These disguises allow him to investigate magical activity without attracting crowds or forcing subordinates to observe formal protocol. In an anime-original outing, he assumes the identity of an elderly woman named Chronovala.
After using his stored time to restore his life, Julius returns in the body of his thirteen-year-old self. His forehead mark disappears, his grimoire is reduced to a single page, and his smaller body severely limits the amount of power he can release.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Julius is regarded as the strongest active Magic Knight in the Clover Kingdom during his tenure. He possesses immense mana, fine control, broad magical knowledge, and physical reactions capable of following attacks from Light Magic. His authority rests not only on political appointment but on a combat record sufficient to establish him as the kingdom’s foremost mage.
His Time Magic manipulates the flow of time around living beings, objects, spells, and designated areas. Julius can accelerate time to age a target, suspend a person in a temporal enclosure, decelerate incoming attacks, or reverse a wound to an earlier state. Because the attribute violates ordinary natural rules, it is classified as Arcane Stage.
The central mechanism of Julius’s power is the acquisition and storage of time. He takes time from targets and retains it as a reserve, represented by the mark on his forehead. Those accumulated years can later fuel unusually large spells, restoration, or temporary changes to his own body. Before his battle with Patolli, he had stored thirteen years.
Julius combines Time Magic with Mana Zone, taking control of surrounding mana to extend the range and sensitivity of his spells. By accelerating the mana around him and reading how it will flow, he can perceive the immediate future. This predictive awareness helps him evade high-speed attacks, although his body must still be fast enough to respond.
He is also proficient in Restraining Magic and Transformation Magic. His restraints trap opponents in repeating or suspended moments rather than relying on physical bindings. Transformation spells let him impersonate other people, a skill used primarily for covert travel and magical research.
Julius’s grimoire is an enormous collection of loose pages without a conventional cover. It floats above him when activated, with pages turning as he selects spells. The absence of a visible cover initially makes its age and origin impossible to identify; after his revival, only one page remains.
The late revelation concerning Astaroth establishes that Julius’s Time Magic originates from a devil rather than being an ordinary human attribute. Lucius possesses access to the same temporal power and exploits Julius’s identity and position as part of a plan prepared over many years.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
-
Chrono Stasis — traps a target within a compact sphere of suspended time. A captured opponent remains immobilized and can be carried without escaping through ordinary movement.
-
Chrono Stasis Grigora — creates multiple temporal enclosures capable of restraining several targets. Julius uses it when capturing members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
-
Chrono Anastasis — reverses time across an enormous area, restoring objects and protecting people from widespread destruction. The spell requires a vast reserve of stolen time.
-
Time Reversal — turns an injured body or damaged object back to an earlier condition. Julius uses this principle as a form of healing, though it restores previous physical states rather than applying conventional Recovery Magic.
-
Temporal Acceleration — rapidly advances a target’s time, aging or disintegrating it. Julius can take the removed time into his own reserves.
-
Temporal Deceleration — slows the progression of attacks or targets, giving Julius additional opportunity to evade, capture, or counter them.
-
Future Sight — combines Time Magic with Mana Zone to accelerate and read the surrounding flow of mana. This allows Julius to predict events a short distance into the future.
-
Temporary Aging — expends stored time to advance Julius’s physically regressed body toward adulthood for a limited period, briefly restoring part of his former combat capacity.
-
Transformation Magic — changes Julius’s outward appearance so that he can travel without being recognized. These disguises are used more often for observation than combat.
Relationships
Relationships
Marx Francois is Julius’s close aide and primary administrative support. Marx Francois handles reports, organizes meetings, transmits information, and repeatedly searches for Julius when the Wizard King abandons his duties to investigate magic. Julius trusts Marx Francois’s Memory Magic and judgment, even while testing his patience.
Yami Sukehiro was one of Julius’s most consequential recruits. Julius approached Yami Sukehiro when the foreign teenager was feared for his Dark Magic and invited him to join the Grey Deer. He taught Yami Sukehiro the local language, gave him a place within the kingdom, and later trusted him to captain the Black Bulls. Yami Sukehiro’s practice of recruiting rejected mages extends Julius’s belief that unconventional people deserve opportunities.
William Vangeance received similar support. Julius recognized William Vangeance’s World Tree Magic and looked beyond the facial scar that caused others to mistreat him. He gave William Vangeance a mask and brought him into the Grey Deer, after which William Vangeance advanced to captain of the Golden Dawn. Their relationship makes William’s divided loyalties especially painful for both men.
Patolli shares William’s body and leads the Eye of the Midnight Sun under Licht’s name. Julius realizes during their battle that killing Patolli would also kill William, so he concentrates on capture rather than lethal force. Patolli exploits Julius’s attachment to the kingdom’s citizens by launching a spell that forces him to choose between pursuit and mass rescue.
Asta immediately fascinates Julius because Anti Magic falls outside conventional magical classification. Julius treats Asta’s lack of mana as an unusual capability rather than a social defect, examines his swords, and encourages him to accumulate achievements. He later watches Asta grow into one of the kingdom’s principal defenders.
Yuno earns Julius’s attention through his four-leaf grimoire, Wind Magic, and performance in the Golden Dawn. Julius gives Yuno the same advice he gives Asta: ambition alone cannot produce a Wizard King, and only a sustained record of results can establish the necessary public trust.
Zara Ideale profoundly influenced Julius despite the limited time they spent together. Julius admired Zara Ideale’s pride in becoming the first commoner Magic Knight and his sincere commitment to protecting civilians. The murder of Zara Ideale by prejudiced colleagues convinced Julius that the institution required fundamental change.
Zora Ideale, Zara’s son, initially distrusts the Magic Knights because of the corruption surrounding his father’s death. Julius recognizes Zora Ideale’s intelligence and Trap Magic, and his reformist outlook creates space for mages like Zora to challenge noble hypocrisy from within the organization.
Morgen Faust joined the Grey Deer under Julius alongside Yami. Julius valued Morgen Faust’s Light Magic and kind temperament, while the squad gave Morgen a place where his desire to help others could become practical service.
Nacht Faust followed a darker route than his brother, but Julius’s institution eventually gave him a role as a Magic Knight and covert operative. Nacht Faust’s work as the Black Bulls’ vice-captain supports the same squad that grew from Julius’s trust in Yami.
Augustus Kira Clover XIII is the Clover Kingdom’s monarch and Julius’s political counterpart. Augustus Kira Clover XIII resents the public admiration Julius receives and frequently seeks recognition without matching his achievements. Julius generally avoids open conflict with the king while maintaining operational leadership over the Magic Knights.
Damnatio Kira represents the kingdom’s judicial authority and prioritizes institutional stability. Julius works with Damnatio Kira during national emergencies, but their approaches differ: Julius searches for individual potential, whereas Damnatio Kira is more willing to sacrifice an accused person to preserve political order.
Lemiel Silvamillion Clover, the first Wizard King, precedes Julius as the model of a powerful mage committed to protecting the kingdom across social boundaries. Julius’s policies reflect a comparable interest in magical innovation and a society where talent is not confined by rank.
Lucius Zogratis is the other soul inhabiting Julius’s body. Lucius permits Julius to live without awareness of him, allowing the Wizard King to build relationships, acquire authority, and develop Time Magic while Lucius prepares his own future. When Julius finally detects the hidden presence, Lucius seizes control and suppresses him.
Astaroth is the time-associated supreme devil contracted to the shared body. The connection to Astaroth explains why Julius’s Time Magic does not conform to ordinary human attributes and why Damnatio cannot account for the missing devil through established records.
Story Role
Story Role
Julius first appears as the distant goal represented by the title of Wizard King. Asta and Yuno both intend to succeed him, but Julius clarifies that neither strength nor declarations are sufficient. The office belongs to the mage who produces the greatest results and earns recognition through service.
His early appearances establish the political and military structure above the squad captains. Julius examines the treasures recovered from a dungeon, questions Asta and Yuno about their ambitions, and displays immediate excitement over Anti Magic and Wind Spirit Magic. These meetings reveal a leader who evaluates unusual power without the aristocratic contempt common elsewhere in the capital.
During the Eye of the Midnight Sun conflict, Julius captures enemy operatives and attempts to uncover the organization’s leadership. He later confronts Patolli in the royal capital. Though Julius possesses the speed and temporal control to dominate much of the duel, his determination to save William prevents him from using lethal force.
Patolli creates an enormous Light Magic attack aimed at civilians throughout the Clover Kingdom. Julius releases Chrono Anastasis, spending the thirteen years stored in his forehead mark to reverse the spell’s destruction across the country. The rescue leaves him unable to defend himself, and Patolli fatally wounds him.
Julius survives by having previously embedded time in the Swallowtail device discovered by Secre Swallowtail. The stored spell revives him as a thirteen-year-old with only one grimoire page and a fraction of his former strength. To prevent political chaos, his condition is initially concealed from the public while he continues advising the Magic Knights.
His weakened state limits his ability to intervene during the Spade Kingdom crisis. Julius coordinates information and attempts to protect the capital, temporarily aging his body when an ancient demon attacks. The transformation fails before he can finish the battle, exposing his childlike form to the kingdom until Asta arrives.
After the Dark Triad’s defeat, Damnatio confronts Julius with evidence that the supreme devil Astaroth has vanished from the underworld and that Time Magic should not exist among ordinary humans. Julius realizes that something is wrong moments before Lucius takes control of their body, ending Julius’s independent tenure as Wizard King.
Character Development
Character Development
Julius enters the story as an accomplished ruler whose principal development has already occurred. Earlier experiences with Zara, Yami, and William transformed his fascination with magic into a political program: talent must be discovered wherever it appears, and the Magic Knights must protect citizens rather than preserve noble privilege.
His position nevertheless requires compromise. Julius can recruit commoners and reward achievement, but he does not immediately dismantle the kingdom’s class hierarchy. He works through appointments, squad culture, public recognition, and personal example, trusting that accumulated results will gradually alter the institution.
The battle with Patolli brings his ideals into direct conflict. Julius could improve his chances by attacking without regard for William’s survival or by prioritizing the enemy leader over civilians. He refuses both choices. His apparent death therefore follows from the same principles that guided his reign: people are not expendable because of strategic inconvenience.
His return as a child reverses the power relationship between Julius and the knights he once protected. He must depend upon Yami, Asta, the captains, and a new generation of Magic Knights. Although embarrassed by his limited power, he remains enthusiastic about their progress and continues guiding them through knowledge rather than force.
The revelation of Lucius reframes Julius’s achievements without erasing his choices. His identity, magic, and rise may have served circumstances engineered by another soul, yet his affection for the Clover Kingdom and his commitment to equality developed as his own. His horror upon recognizing the hidden presence confirms that Lucius’s plan stands against the life Julius chose.
Etymology
Etymology
“Julius” is a Roman family name most closely associated with Julius Caesar. Its use may parallel the name of King Augustus Kira Clover XIII, whose given name recalls Caesar Augustus. The contrast places two names associated with Roman rulers on the kingdom’s ceremonial monarch and its more popular military leader.
“Novachrono” combines nova, Latin for “new,” with chrono, derived from the Greek chronos, meaning “time.” The construction can be read as “new time,” matching Julius’s temporal magic and his effort to create a new social era for the Clover Kingdom.
The alias “Chronovala” retains the chrono element while disguising his identity. Julius uses it when transformed into an elderly woman during an anime-original investigation.
Several spells employ Greek-derived terminology. Chrono denotes time, stasis means standing still or remaining fixed, and anastasis means rising again or restoration. The names describe temporal suspension and large-scale reversal respectively.

In Other Media
In Other Media
Julius appears throughout the Black Clover television anime, which expands his administrative duties, disguised excursions, and interest in uncommon magic. The adaptation gives him additional opportunities to observe Magic Knight squads outside the manga’s principal conflicts.
In the anime-original Episode 140, Julius transforms into an elderly woman and uses the name Chronovala while investigating a magic tool. The episode develops his habit of leaving the capital in disguise and shows how readily magical curiosity can draw him away from official work.
Julius plays a supporting role in Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. Set during the period after his physical regression, the film connects his administration to former Wizard Kings who challenge the current Clover Kingdom. His knowledge of their histories helps explain the threat while his reduced power prevents him from resolving it alone.
He appears as a playable or collectible character in games including Black Clover: Quartet Knights, Black Clover: Phantom Knights, and Black Clover M: Rise of the Wizard King. Game adaptations commonly emphasize temporal restraint, turn manipulation, recovery, and large-area control.
Reception
Reception
Julius became one of the series’ most recognizable characters outside the central squads, with popularity tied to his enthusiasm for magic, inclusive leadership, and battle against Patolli. His second-poll placement was his strongest official result: fifth overall with 1,032 votes.
Later polls continued to place him among the franchise’s better-known supporting figures. He ranked thirteenth in the third Japanese poll, seventeenth in the fourth, and twenty-eighth in the fifth worldwide poll with 3,895 votes.
The confrontation between Julius and Patolli is frequently singled out in discussion of the anime adaptation. Its high-speed choreography, Time Magic effects, and shift from a controlled duel to a kingdom-wide rescue showcase both his combat ability and his governing priorities.
The Lucius revelation generated renewed attention around earlier scenes involving Julius’s grimoire, transformation, stored time, and unexplained unease. It also changed the interpretation of his powers by establishing a connection between the Wizard King’s Time Magic and the missing supreme devil Astaroth.
