Damnatio Kira

Damnatio is stern, calculating, ruthless, and intensely devoted to the idea of maintaining order. His conception of justice is institutional rather than compassionate: if sacrificing one person protects the political structure of the kingdom, he is prepared to make that choice.

He is notably resistant to family favoritism. Damnatio has previously judged members of his own house, demonstrating that royal blood does not automatically exempt someone from his standards.

His prosecution of Asta shows the darker side of this mentality. Damnatio recognizes that the possessed Magic Knights cannot all be punished without crippling the kingdom's defenses, so he instead attempts to place responsibility for the crisis on the devil-connected peasant whose condemnation is politically convenient.

Damnatio uses Scale Magic, manifesting magical scales that evaluate and alter balance.

Scale Regulate reduces the magical power of targets by tipping the balance against them, allowing Damnatio to weaken multiple spells and mages at once. His scales can also react to demonic magical power.

As a royal, Damnatio possesses immense mana despite rarely functioning as a conventional battlefield mage.

After Lucius transforms him into a Paladin and incarnates the purified devil Baal within him, Damnatio gains Atmosphere Magic in addition to Scale Magic. His new attribute lets him manipulate air and produce near-instantaneous slashing attacks, while purified devil power dramatically increases his mana and physical capabilities.

Damnatio enters the main story after the Elf Reincarnation crisis, when the kingdom requires someone to assign responsibility for the destruction and possession carried out by Magic Knights.

He places Asta and Secre Swallowtail on trial for Forbidden Magic and devil-related power. When Asta cannot immediately prove the existence of Zagred, Damnatio attempts to use Marie Adlai's possession as an example and force Asta to expose his devil form publicly.

The Black Bulls intervene before a final judgment can be carried out. Nozel Silva and Fuegoleon Vermillion then deliver an alternative arrangement from Julius Novachrono, temporarily delaying the case while the Black Bulls investigate devils.

Damnatio subsequently conducts his own research into devil hosts. After the Spade Kingdom conflict, his investigation leads him to realize that Astaroth, Time Magic, and Julius cannot all fit the historical record. He confronts Julius moments before Lucius Zogratis takes control of their body and incapacitates him.

Lucius later transforms Damnatio into a Paladin and sends him to stop the Black Bulls from bringing Asta back from the Land of the Sun. Asta eventually defeats him with Anti Magic and Zetten, freeing him from Lucius's control.

Julius Novachrono is a leader Damnatio respects despite repeatedly disagreeing with his lenient approach. Damnatio's research eventually exposes the inconsistency surrounding Julius and Time Magic.

Asta becomes Damnatio's principal defendant after the Elf Reincarnation crisis and later the person who frees him from Lucius's Paladin control.

Secre Swallowtail is prosecuted alongside Asta because of her use of Forbidden Magic.

Marie Adlai is used by Damnatio as leverage during Asta's trial because she had been possessed by an elf.

Lucius Zogratis incapacitates Damnatio after his investigation comes too close to the truth and later converts him into a Paladin.

Baal is the purified devil incarnated within Damnatio, granting him Atmosphere Magic.
