Jill

Jill is sensitive, compassionate and deeply unhappy with her home life. Her father, Zepek, is an embittered former soldier who drinks heavily and mistreats his family, while Jill's mother offers little protection from the hostile atmosphere. Jill consequently dreams of leaving the village and finding somewhere she can belong.

She retains considerable courage despite her fear. Her attachment to Rosine survives even after she sees what her childhood friend has become, and she repeatedly places herself in danger rather than simply abandoning her.

Jill is also perceptive enough to recognize that the Misty Valley's apparent freedom is built on cruelty. The realization distinguishes her from Rosine: Jill wants to escape suffering, but she ultimately refuses to solve that suffering by surrendering her humanity.

Jill is an ordinary human child with no supernatural abilities or combat training. She survives primarily through determination, assistance from others and her familiarity with the area surrounding her village.

Her connection to Rosine gives her unusual access to the Misty Valley. Rosine trusts Jill enough to show her the supposed paradise she has created and offers her a place within it.

Jill's greatest strength is psychological. Despite living in an abusive household and being presented with an apparently easy escape, she can recognize the horror beneath Rosine's fantasy and reject it.

Guts and Puck encounter Jill while traveling through territory plagued by attacks from supposed elves. Jill eventually identifies their leader as Rosine, her childhood friend who disappeared after suffering in her own abusive household.

Rosine takes Jill into the Misty Valley and offers her the opportunity to become an elf. Jill is initially tempted by the possibility of escaping her miserable life, but the murderous games of Rosine's followers and the revelation that abducted children are transformed into pseudo-Apostles destroy the illusion of paradise.

During Guts's battle with Rosine, Jill protects her wounded friend from Guts's finishing blow. Afterward, Jill asks Guts to take her with him. He refuses, forcing her to understand that his journey offers no sanctuary and that she must return to confront her own "battlefield" at home.

Rosine is Jill's childhood friend and once the person closest to her. Even after learning what Rosine has become, Jill cannot simply discard their bond and physically shields her from Guts.

Guts rescues Jill and becomes a figure she admires as an escape from her powerless life. When she asks to accompany him, he refuses and directs her back toward her own life rather than allowing her to enter his violent struggle.

Puck treats Jill kindly throughout the Misty Valley incident and leaves her with an elf bramble that can help protect her.

Zepek is Jill's father, a former soldier whose alcoholism and abusive behavior contribute heavily to her desire to leave home.
