Personality
Personality
Jerome is easygoing, somewhat irreverent and more interested in ordinary pleasures than religious zeal. His position places him alongside Holy See forces, but he does not share the fanaticism of the inquisitors and readily recognizes the humanity of people officially treated as sinners or heretics.
His affection for Luca is sincere. The pearl necklace he gives her is extravagant compared with the conditions around Albion, and he is initially taken aback when she distributes the pearls rather than keeping the gift for herself.
When danger becomes real, Jerome proves more dependable than his relaxed behavior initially suggests. He is frightened by supernatural threats but continues helping people around him rather than abandoning them.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Jerome is an experienced soldier and competent swordsman. Although nowhere near Guts's level, he can defend himself against ordinary human opponents and contributes during the fighting around Albion.
His military position also gives him practical knowledge of the Tower of Conviction and the Holy See's security. This becomes useful when Luca and the others need to move through areas controlled by soldiers.
Jerome has no supernatural abilities. During the horrors surrounding the Incarnation Ceremony, he survives through conventional weapons, quick judgment and cooperation with much stronger companions.
Story Role
Story Role
Jerome is introduced through his relationship with Luca. His comparatively mundane concerns initially provide a contrast with the religious hysteria surrounding Albion, but Casca's arrival and the escalating heretic hunt pull him into the central conflict.
He becomes involved with Guts's attempt to recover Casca after she is captured. Jerome accompanies the rescue effort and witnesses firsthand the supernatural events overtaking the Tower of Conviction.
As Albion is consumed by the mass of restless dead, Jerome continues helping Luca's group and the refugees survive. He escapes the catastrophe and remains associated with Luca afterward.
Jerome later reappears in Falconia, where Luca and her companions have established a new life.
Relationships
Relationships
Luca is Jerome's lover and the person to whom he is most closely attached. His gift of pearls demonstrates his affection, while her decision to share them among her companions illustrates the difference between Jerome's romantic gesture and Luca's communal priorities.
Guts becomes Jerome's temporary ally during the struggle to recover Casca from the Tower of Conviction.
Casca, known around Luca's group as Elaine, is someone Jerome helps protect during the crisis at Albion.
Nina and Pepe belong to the group surrounding Luca, placing Jerome within their wider circle as well.
