Huo Yan Li

Huo Yan is laid-back, responsible and reluctant to waste energy on meaningless fighting. During the joint training assignment involving recruits from other brigades, he sees little value in unnecessary sparring and does not share Rekka Hoshimiya's enthusiasm for combat.

He nevertheless takes Company 1's standards seriously. Huo Yan observes formalities, including dress and proper conduct, and his relaxed personality should not be mistaken for indifference toward his responsibilities.

His religious beliefs are similarly measured. Even after learning disturbing truths surrounding the Holy Sol Temple, Huo Yan continues to value the institution because ordinary people rely upon its teachings for hope during tragedy. His faith is directed toward the benevolent ideals represented by the Sun rather than the Evangelist's destructive doctrine.

Huo Yan is a Third Generation pyrokinetic. His principal demonstrated combat technique is Lantern Fist, which concentrates his flames into close-range strikes.

He is an experienced Fire Soldier who has served alongside Karim and Rekka for years. Although the series gives his abilities less extensive focus than those of several other Company 1 officers, his rank and experience place him comfortably above ordinary recruits.

Huo Yan also possesses strong leadership skills. His temperament allows him to evaluate dangerous situations without becoming swept up in emotion, a quality particularly useful within a brigade that combines military, firefighting and religious responsibilities.

Huo Yan is introduced when Company 8 begins investigating Company 1 for possible connections to artificial Infernal incidents. His friendship with Karim and Rekka places him near the center of the brigade being scrutinized.

During the inter-company training period, Huo Yan supervises younger Fire Soldiers and participates in Company 1's operations when Infernal incidents occur. He is seriously affected by the conspiracy unfolding within the brigade even though he is not responsible for it.

After Leonard Burns can no longer continue as Company 1's captain, Huo Yan assumes leadership of the brigade. His promotion reflects both his experience and his ability to preserve Company 1's role while confronting the uncomfortable truths surrounding the Holy Sol Temple.

Karim Flam is one of Huo Yan's long-time friends and fellow Company 1 officers. Their years of service create a bond extending beyond ordinary professional cooperation.

Rekka Hoshimiya is another long-time friend and colleague. Huo Yan's restrained personality contrasts sharply with Rekka's relentless enthusiasm.

Leonard Burns is Huo Yan's captain and senior within Company 1. Huo Yan serves beneath him before eventually taking responsibility for leading Company 1 himself.

Tamaki Kotatsu serves in Company 1 early in her career and respects Huo Yan as one of her senior officers.

Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle interact with Huo Yan while training with Company 1 as part of Company 8's investigation.
