Shinji

Shinji begins as timid and easily intimidated, particularly when confronted by older or more aggressive kendō practitioners. He nevertheless cares about his club and is ashamed that fear prevents him from defending its reputation.

Ikkaku recognizes that Shinji genuinely wants to become stronger. Once given a concrete reason to fight and rigorous instruction, he shows persistence, courage, and loyalty to his injured senior teammates.

Shinji has no spiritual powers. His abilities are limited to ordinary human athleticism and kendō training.

At first, his technique and confidence are underdeveloped. Intensive practice under Ikkaku Madarame improves his stance, reactions, and willingness to press an attack. His progress is meaningful at the school level but does not make him comparable to a Shinigami.

Members of Kotei Academy’s kendō club attack Shinji on his way home. His senior clubmates defend him and are injured, leaving Karakura High without enough experienced competitors for the approaching match.

Ikkaku is recruited as a temporary replacement and begins training the remaining students. Shinji struggles with the regimen but continues after Ikkaku notices the determination in his eyes.

During the tournament, Ikkaku is prevented from simply winning the contest for them, forcing Shinji and the students to rely on their own training. Shinji overcomes his fear and fights to avenge his seniors’ defeat, helping restore the club’s confidence.

Ikkaku Madarame is Shinji’s demanding temporary coach. His instruction gives Shinji the confidence to stand against Kotei Academy.

Keigo Asano helps draw Ikkaku into the school club’s problem and is involved in the episode’s tournament preparations.

Shinji’s unnamed senior club members protect him during the initial assault. Their injuries motivate him to continue training and face the rival team.
