Personality
Personality
Hikoichi is energetic, excitable and intensely curious about basketball. When he encounters an impressive play or surprising piece of information, he immediately wants to record it. His enthusiasm frequently produces loud reactions from the sidelines.
He is also remarkably easy to impress. Sakuragi's enormous confidence initially convinces Hikoichi that he must be a famous or exceptionally important player, which in turn flatters Sakuragi enormously.
Despite the comic exaggeration, Hikoichi's interest in basketball is sincere. He wants to understand what makes strong players effective and diligently observes opponents rather than simply cheering for Ryonan.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Hikoichi is formally associated with Ryonan's basketball team but is not part of its important competitive rotation. His greatest contribution is observation and information gathering.
He takes detailed notes about opposing teams, individual players and games. This habit effectively gives him some of the functions of a team manager or scout, although he remains a first-year basketball club member.
His 165 cm height also shapes his admiration for Ryota Miyagi. Miyagi is only slightly taller yet succeeds as the starting point guard of a major Kanagawa team, making him particularly inspiring to Hikoichi.
Story Role
Story Role
Hikoichi first becomes significant as an observer of Shohoku. His meeting with Sakuragi produces one of the series' recurring comic relationships: Hikoichi earnestly tries to gather intelligence while Sakuragi eagerly feeds him an inflated account of his own greatness.
As the prefectural tournament develops, Hikoichi continues appearing at important matches and recording what he sees. His broad interest extends beyond Ryonan's immediate opponents to notable teams and players elsewhere.
At the national tournament, his scouting interest brings him into contact with Toyotama's Minori Kishimoto. Kishimoto's contemptuous dismissal of Sendoh immediately puts him at odds with the fiercely loyal Hikoichi.
Relationships
Relationships
Yayoi Aida is Hikoichi's older sister and a professional basketball reporter. Their shared habit of closely observing players reflects their common enthusiasm for the sport.
Hanamichi Sakuragi fascinates Hikoichi from their first meeting, although much of Hikoichi's early impression comes from Sakuragi's own exaggerated claims.
Ryota Miyagi earns Hikoichi's admiration because he succeeds as a starting point guard despite being only slightly taller than Hikoichi.
Akira Sendoh is Ryonan's ace and one of the players Hikoichi admires most strongly.
Moichi Taoka is Ryonan's coach, whom Hikoichi frequently accompanies while observing games.
Minori Kishimoto antagonizes Hikoichi by dismissing Akira Sendoh's ability.
