Yayoi Aida

Yayoi is observant, persistent and confident in her basketball judgment. She approaches games as a journalist, looking beyond immediate results to identify players whose ability or potential deserves attention. Shohoku fascinates her because its unconventional roster repeatedly performs beyond outside expectations.

She can also be forceful with her assistant, Nakamura, especially when his cautious driving threatens to make them late. Her impatience in those moments reflects how seriously she takes the job and her determination not to miss an important game.

Yayoi shares her younger brother's capacity for becoming excited by unusual talent, though she expresses it with more professional restraint. She is willing to revise her expectations when a player proves her initial assessment incomplete.

Yayoi's expertise lies in basketball observation and sports journalism. She recognizes individual strengths, follows developing players and evaluates matchups while gathering material for her magazine.

Her work requires her to travel between important games, observe practices and maintain awareness of teams beyond Kanagawa. At the national tournament, she is able to observe Sannoh and gather information about the country's dominant high-school team.

Unlike Hikoichi, who records information as an enthusiastic student, Yayoi operates professionally. Her assessments provide an outside perspective on Shohoku's growth and on the caliber of competition surrounding them.

Yayoi becomes a recurring observer during the later Kanagawa tournament. She follows Shohoku closely as the team challenges established powers and becomes increasingly impressed by the development of its players.

Her attention to Sakuragi is particularly significant. Where many spectators initially see an inexperienced and eccentric beginner, Yayoi recognizes that his physical ability and rate of improvement make him worth following. She also watches the established stars around him and treats Shohoku's performances as increasingly newsworthy.

At the national tournament, Yayoi continues covering Shohoku and observes Sannoh's formidable preparation. Her presence helps establish the national scale of the challenge facing Shohoku and provides a reporter's perspective on how extraordinary the team's progress has become.

Hikoichi Aida is Yayoi's younger brother. Both are devoted basketball observers, although Yayoi works professionally while Hikoichi compulsively records information as Ryonan's enthusiastic first-year.

Akira Sendou is Ryonan's ace and someone Yayoi is personally attracted to in addition to recognizing his basketball ability.

Hanamichi Sakuragi increasingly attracts Yayoi's attention as a reporter because his unusual athletic gifts develop into genuine basketball ability.

Kaede Rukawa is another Shohoku player whose exceptional talent makes him an obvious subject of her professional attention.

Nakamura is Yayoi's trainee assistant and regular traveling companion, frequently driving her between games.
