Snake is pragmatic, compassionate, skeptical, and more intellectually curious than his mercenary surroundings initially suggest. He dislikes pointless cruelty and intervenes when Fox and other Guests abuse slaves merely for entertainment.

He nevertheless accepts violence as part of his profession. Snake will kill when he believes his responsibilities require it, creating an important contrast with Thorfinn's increasingly absolute rejection of violence.

Snake is particularly close to Sverkell. He visits the old farmer regularly, eats his food, argues with him, and reads scripture aloud despite not sharing Sverkell's faith.

Snake is an exceptional swordsman whose speed surprises even Thorfinn. Their brief exchanges show that he can force the former assassin into using the reflexes and footwork developed during years of warfare.

He fights with a curved sword and relies on fast, controlled attacks rather than the enormous physical strength favored by warriors such as Thorkell.

Snake also possesses sharp battlefield judgment. He recognizes feints, evaluates injuries, and quickly notices when an apparent fugitive is moving in ways inconsistent with wounds he should have sustained.

His earlier life included service in Miklagard, giving him experience far beyond ordinary farm security.

Snake is introduced when his Guests are tormenting Thorfinn. He stops the abuse and later tests Thorfinn personally, discovering that the supposedly passive slave still possesses extraordinary combat reflexes.

He becomes central to the conflict surrounding Gardar. Gardar has killed members of Snake's group, leaving Snake caught between sympathy for Arnheid's situation and responsibility toward the men serving under him.

Snake eventually fights Gardar directly and later becomes involved in Thorfinn and Einar's attempt to help Arnheid escape.

When Canute's army comes for Ketil's estate, Snake recognizes that the farm cannot defeat professional royal soldiers. He still chooses to fight after years of living on Ketil's food, reasoning that he owes the household that much.

Sverkell is Snake's closest established companion. Their constant arguments conceal genuine affection and mutual concern.

Thorfinn earns Snake's respect through both his extraordinary combat ability and his refusal to kill.

Einar is another enslaved worker Snake comes to know through Thorfinn and Sverkell.

Ketil employs Snake and his Guests, though Snake does not blindly agree with his employer's decisions.

Gardar becomes Snake's principal personal opponent after killing several Guests during his escape.

Arnheid places Snake in a moral conflict because protecting her husband directly clashes with Snake's responsibility to his dead and wounded men.

Fox serves under Snake and is repeatedly restrained by his commander's more measured approach.

Thorgil trained under Snake before becoming a royal thegn.
