Einar

Einar is emotional, hardworking, compassionate, and much more openly expressive than Thorfinn. He becomes angry at injustice quickly and initially struggles to understand Thorfinn's emotional numbness, particularly when his new companion seems almost indifferent to abuse.

He is also deeply empathetic. Once Einar understands the trauma underlying Thorfinn's behavior, irritation gives way to fierce loyalty. He encourages him to value his own life and becomes one of the first people to treat him as a brother rather than a weapon, slave, or enemy.

Einar's hatred of war comes from personal experience rather than abstraction. Vikings have destroyed his home and family more than once, leaving him painfully aware that celebrated warriors often appear very differently to the civilians whose lives they destroy.

Einar is not an accomplished warrior, but years of farm labor have given him a large, muscular body and substantial physical strength. His 184 cm frame makes him considerably larger than Thorfinn.

His practical expertise lies in agriculture. Einar understands clearing land, planting crops, maintaining fields, and the long-term labor required to turn uncultivated ground into productive farmland.

He is willing to fight when people he cares about are threatened, but he lacks the technical martial training needed to compete with experienced warriors such as Snake or Thorfinn.

Einar is captured after raiders attack his home in northern England and is eventually purchased for Ketil's estate. There he meets Thorfinn, another slave assigned to clear a forest and cultivate enough land that the pair can eventually buy their freedom.

Their initially awkward partnership develops into a deep friendship as the two work side by side through several seasons. Einar also becomes close to Arnheid, another enslaved worker on the estate.

The events surrounding Arnheid and Gardar deepen Einar's hatred of slavery and violence. After Arnheid's death, he and Thorfinn decide that merely escaping their own circumstances is not enough; they begin imagining a place where people fleeing war and slavery could live safely.

Einar subsequently travels with Thorfinn and becomes one of the foundational members of the Vinland expedition. Arnheid Village is named in memory of the woman whose fate helped shape their shared dream.

During the final Vinland conflict, Einar remains fiercely committed to the settlement even as Thorfinn concludes evacuation may be necessary. Their disagreement becomes one of the most painful tests of a friendship built from slavery onward.

Thorfinn is Einar's closest friend and eventually the man he considers a brother. Their years of shared labor on Ketil's farm form the foundation of their relationship.

Arnheid becomes extremely dear to Einar. Her suffering and death profoundly influence his commitment to building a place without slavery.

Ketil owns Einar after purchasing him as a slave and offers him a route to freedom through agricultural labor.

Pater helps Einar and Thorfinn navigate life on the farm and treats them with unusual fairness because he was once enslaved himself.

Sverkel forms a mutually respectful relationship with Einar and Thorfinn, allowing them to borrow equipment and work in exchange for helping around his property.

Leif Ericson later travels with Einar and helps connect him to Thorfinn's larger dream of reaching Vinland.

Gudrid and Hild become Einar's close companions during the later expedition.
