Vinland Saga

Arnheid

アルネイズ

Story Role

Arnheid works on Ketil's estate when Einar arrives and quickly becomes one of the few people with whom he feels comfortable. Einar develops strong feelings for her and dreams of somehow helping her gain freedom.

Her history becomes central when an escaped slave named Gardar reaches the area.

Gardar is Arnheid's husband. Years earlier, he left their village to fight over an iron deposit; while the men were away, enemies attacked, their son Hjalti was lost, and Arnheid was sold into slavery. Gardar was enslaved separately.

Arnheid helps Gardar after he reaches Ketil's farm, eventually freeing him despite knowing the danger. Thorfinn and Einar assist their attempted escape after recognizing that she cannot simply abandon her husband.

Gardar dies from wounds sustained during the escape. Arnheid, who is pregnant with Ketil's child, is subsequently beaten almost to death by Ketil for attempting to flee. She later dies from those injuries despite Thorfinn, Einar, Leif, and Pater's efforts.

Her death becomes foundational to Thorfinn and Einar's dream of establishing a land without slavery or war. Their eventual settlement in Vinland is named Arnheid Village in her memory.
