Personality
Personality
Hatchan is cheerful, simple-minded, and unusually hospitable for a member of the Arlong Pirates. He can become confused by straightforward tricks and occasionally reveals useful information without realizing it. These comic qualities coexist with genuine combat ability and complicity in Arlong’s regime.
Unlike Arlong, Hatchan does not display an equally intense hatred of humans, yet he follows his captain and helps maintain the occupation. His later remorse is sincere. He accepts Nami’s anger without demanding forgiveness and tries to repay the Straw Hats through assistance rather than excuses.
Hatchan values friendship strongly. His desire to operate a takoyaki shop reflects a long-standing personal dream, and his relationship with Camie and Pappag gives him a peaceful community outside piracy.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
As an octopus fish-man, Hatchan possesses six arms, considerable strength, underwater mobility, suction-cup adhesion, and the ability to expel ink. His unusual anatomy supports his signature Six-Sword Style, in which he wields one sword in each hand.
Hatchan claims that each of his swords weighs hundreds of kilograms. By rotating his arms and coordinating multiple blades, he can create powerful barrages that are difficult to block conventionally. He also uses the weight of his swords to increase the force of downward attacks.
His strength remains below that of the series’ foremost swordsmen. Roronoa Zoro, despite fighting while badly wounded, defeats Hatchan by exploiting openings in his multi-sword technique.
Story Role
Story Role
Hatchan first sails with the Sun Pirates under Fisher Tiger. After the crew divides, he joins Arlong in the East Blue and becomes one of the officers stationed at Arlong Park. During the Straw Hats’ assault, he battles Zoro and is defeated.
After escaping Marine custody, Hatchan travels through a series of adventures, befriends Camie and Pappag, and realizes his dream of opening the Takoyaki 8 shop. His new life eventually brings him back into contact with the Straw Hats.
At Sabaody Archipelago, Hatchan helps the crew despite fearing Nami’s justified resentment. He is shot by Saint Charlos while trying to prevent a confrontation, prompting Luffy to strike the World Noble. Hatchan later returns to Fish-Man Island, where he is gravely wounded after attempting to stop the New Fish-Man Pirates.
Relationships
Relationships
Arlong was Hatchan’s captain and childhood associate. Hatchan followed Arlong into the East Blue and participated in his occupation, but later rejects the path represented by his former crew.
Nami was one of the principal victims of the Arlong Pirates. Hatchan feels guilty about his treatment of Nami and does not expect immediate forgiveness; her decision to cooperate with him at Sabaody acknowledges his present conduct without erasing the past.
Roronoa Zoro defeats Hatchan at Arlong Park but later helps rescue him from captivity. Monkey D. Luffy treats Hatchan as an ally after learning of his friendship with Camie and Pappag.
Camie is Hatchan’s close friend and business partner, while Pappag is another trusted companion associated with Takoyaki 8. Hatchan risks himself to protect both of them.
Fisher Tiger was Hatchan’s captain in the Sun Pirates. Jinbei is his former crewmate and fellow veteran of that group. Kuroobi and Chew served alongside him before and during their time under Arlong.
