Personality
Personality
Chew usually maintains a cool, detached manner. He speaks with confidence in the Arlong Pirates’ superiority and considers ordinary humans too fragile to threaten a fish-man. This assurance makes him dismissive of opponents who rely on deception rather than strength.
He is nevertheless susceptible to provocation and panic. Once Usopp’s tricks begin inflicting real damage, Chew loses much of his composure and pursues him rashly. His defeat follows from this inability to adapt to an opponent whose methods do not resemble a direct martial contest.
Chew shares Arlong’s supremacist outlook and participates willingly in the crew’s occupation of human settlements. Whatever bonds he retains from his earlier life among the Sun Pirates do not prevent him from enforcing Arlong’s violent rule.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
As an archerfish fish-man, Chew possesses superhuman strength and the enhanced aquatic capabilities common to fish-men. His defining ability is drawing water into his mouth and expelling it as high-speed shots capable of striking targets at considerable range.
He can vary the volume and power of these attacks, from compact water bullets to heavier blasts. Because the technique requires a supply of water, Chew carries a container during his fight away from the sea.
Chew is physically tougher than an ordinary human, but his fighting style depends heavily on ranged pressure and confidence. Usopp defeats him through feigned injury, fire, and repeated blunt-force attacks rather than trying to overpower him directly.
Story Role
Story Role
Before joining the Arlong Pirates, Chew serves in the Sun Pirates under Fisher Tiger. Following the group’s fragmentation, he accompanies Arlong to the East Blue and becomes one of the officers enforcing Arlong’s control over the Conomi Islands.
During the assault on Arlong Park, Chew pursues Usopp away from the main battlefield. Usopp initially pretends to have been killed, hoping to avoid the fight, but shame at abandoning his friends compels him to return.
Usopp uses deception to create openings, sets Chew on fire with an ignited attack after covering him with alcohol, and finishes him with repeated hammer blows. The victory marks an important early instance of Usopp overcoming fear through ingenuity and determination.
Relationships
Relationships
Arlong is Chew’s captain, and Chew accepts both his authority and his supremacist ideology. Fisher Tiger was his earlier captain in the Sun Pirates, whose mixed legacy eventually gave rise to several separate factions.
Kuroobi and Hatchan are Chew’s fellow officers and former Sun Pirates. Together they form the core fighting force protecting Arlong Park.
Usopp is Chew’s principal opponent. Chew initially dismisses Usopp as a cowardly and physically inferior human, but Usopp’s willingness to return to the battle leads to Chew’s defeat.
