Haruko Otani

Haruko is primarily characterized through her role as Masaki's mother and Takashi's wife. Faced with the incomprehensible Gantz room, she remains concerned with the safety of her family rather than the competitive aspects of the hunt.

She is frightened by the circumstances and lacks the experience possessed by returning hunters. Her reactions reflect those of an ordinary parent suddenly confronted with creatures and technology she has no preparation to understand.

The manga gives Haruko little independent characterization beyond her family relationship and participation in the mission.

Haruko has no established supernatural abilities or specialized combat training.

As a Gantz participant, she has access to the equipment distributed by the black sphere, including the enhanced suit and weapons. The story does not establish significant proficiency with that technology for her.

Her lack of experience places her among the vulnerable new recruits who depend heavily on veteran hunters during the Dinosaur Alien mission.

Haruko appears when the Otani family is transported to the Gantz apartment before the Dinosaur Alien hunt. Their presence is particularly striking because Gantz has selected not merely an adult couple but their child as well.

The family enters the mission amid a large population of newcomers, many of whom do not understand the rules or the importance of the equipment they have been given.

Haruko and her family are caught in the extreme casualties of the Dinosaur Alien mission, which rapidly eliminates many of the inexperienced participants before they can adapt to Gantz.

Takashi Otani is Haruko's husband and enters Gantz alongside her.

Masaki Otani is Haruko's young son. Protecting Masaki Otani is her principal concern after the family is forced into the Dinosaur Alien mission.

Kei Kurono is one of the experienced hunters present with the Otani family and the other newcomers during the same mission.
