Personality
Personality
Hanzawa is dramatic, anxious, vindictive, and far less intimidating in practice than his internal monologues suggest. He arrives in Beika convinced that revenge is his overriding purpose, only to become overwhelmed by apartment hunting, employment, public transportation, crime, and basic urban survival.
He frequently reacts to Beika's residents with disbelief. Behaviors considered routine in the main Detective Conan series appear horrifying when viewed from the perspective of a relatively ordinary newcomer, making Hanzawa an outsider through whom the spin-off exaggerates the parent series' conventions.
Hanzawa is not without kindness. He forms friendships, worries about his mother, works ordinary jobs, and becomes attached to his dog Pometaro. These mundane attachments repeatedly interfere with the sinister image he tries to maintain.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Hanzawa possesses no supernatural abilities and is not an accomplished detective or master criminal.
His most recognizable feature is his culprit-silhouette appearance, a visual joke based on the anonymous black figures Detective Conan uses before revealing a criminal's identity. The spin-off treats this appearance as Hanzawa's normal design rather than a disguise.
He displays determination and surprising resilience simply by adapting to Beika, where murders, kidnappings, explosions, suspicious neighbors, and encounters with famous detectives are treated as routine hazards.
Story Role
Story Role
Hanzawa arrives at Beika Station intending to locate the person against whom he seeks revenge. Before he can make meaningful progress, he discovers that merely establishing a life in Beika is an ordeal.
His attempts to find housing and employment bring him into contact with locations and characters familiar from Detective Conan. The spin-off reinterprets these elements from the perspective of someone who does not consider weekly murder cases normal.
The identity of Hanzawa's intended target and the exact circumstances behind his revenge are deliberately stretched across the comedy rather than immediately resolving his original objective.
Relationships
Relationships
Pometaro is Hanzawa's beloved Pomeranian and becomes one of the most important sources of uncomplicated affection in his life.
Conan Edogawa is one of the famous Beika residents whose presence contributes to the town's bizarre atmosphere from Hanzawa's perspective.
Ran Mouri is another familiar Beika resident encountered within the spin-off's exaggerated version of Detective Conan's setting.
Kogoro Mouri is a prominent local detective whose fame forms part of the environment Hanzawa enters.
Hiroshi Agasa is among the established residents whose everyday activities are reframed through Hanzawa's outsider perspective.
