Habataki Hyuga

Hyuga begins as violent, arrogant and openly contemptuous of weakness. He compares weaker people to weeds and has no ethical objection to striking somebody from behind if doing so gives him an advantage.

He describes himself as serious and solitary, although Hansode Shiranui summarizes him more bluntly as someone with a bad personality. His hostility extends even toward students who genuinely want to practice kendo because he initially wants the hall for himself.

Medaka's intervention softens his behavior. He becomes more willing to share the club with others and participate in school activities without treating every weaker student as beneath him.

Hyuga is a nationally recognized kendo practitioner. His skill is sufficient for him to defeat eight older students with little visible effort when he first asserts control over the kendo hall.

His technique combines speed, precision and aggression. Unlike several supernatural fighters at Hakoniwa, his ability is conventional martial skill rather than an Abnormality.

Despite his national-level reputation, Zenkichi demonstrates that Hyuga is not unbeatable in an unrestricted fight, where techniques outside formal kendo can neutralize his advantages.

Hyuga appears in the opening chapter after the Student Council begins restoring the neglected kendo hall. He attacks the delinquents occupying it and requests that Medaka remove them so he can use the facility alone.

The conflict becomes one of the first demonstrations of Medaka's unusual approach to solving requests. Rather than simply choosing between Hyuga and the delinquents, she pushes both sides toward rebuilding the Kendo Club.

Hyuga subsequently participates in broader school activities, including the inter-club swimming competition, and remains associated with the restored kendo program.

Medaka Kurokami changes Hyuga's approach to the Kendo Club by refusing to solve his request through simple exclusion. He later appears to develop an attraction toward Medaka Kurokami.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi confronts Hyuga when his attacks on the other kendo students go too far and defeats him with a single strike.

Hansode Shiranui knows Hyuga from the beginning of the story and describes his personality unfavorably.

Mahibi Moji shares the restored Kendo Club with Hyuga. The two continue to clash because of their very different personalities and histories with the club.
