Gokuu Son

Goku is born Kakarot on Planet Vegeta to the low-class Saiyans Bardock and Gine. Unlike the infant-infiltration account described by Raditz, later material shows his parents sending him away shortly before the planet’s destruction. Bardock suspects that Frieza intends to eliminate the Saiyans and launches his young son toward Earth in the hope that he will survive.

On Earth, the infant is found by Grandpa Gohan, who names him Son Goku and raises him in the mountains. Goku is initially aggressive, but a fall into a ravine causes a severe head injury. After recovering, he becomes cheerful and manageable, forgetting both his Saiyan mission and his extraterrestrial origin.

Grandpa Gohan teaches Goku basic martial arts and gives him the four-star Dragon Ball. During a full moon, Goku transforms into a Great Ape and accidentally kills his adoptive grandfather, although he retains no memory of the event. He continues living alone until Bulma arrives in search of the Dragon Balls.

Goku joins Bulma’s journey because her Dragon Radar can help him see the four-star ball again. Their travels introduce him to Oolong, Yamcha, Puar and the wider world beyond his mountain home. The quest eventually leads him to Master Roshi, whose training gives Goku the foundation of his mature fighting style.

Under Roshi, Goku trains beside Krillin, delivering milk, plowing fields by hand, swimming through dangerous waters and carrying heavy turtle shells. The regimen emphasizes strength, speed, discipline and ordinary study. Goku enters the World Martial Arts Tournament expecting victory and instead learns that continued growth requires opponents who can still surpass him.

Goku is cheerful, direct and largely unconcerned with status. He treats gods, rulers, farmers and former enemies with similar informality. His limited conventional education can make him seem naïve, but he is highly perceptive in combat and often understands a fighter’s motives through the way that person moves or uses power.

Fighting is Goku’s principal passion. He enjoys testing himself against strong opponents and frequently seeks rematches after losing. This drive is not identical to a desire for domination: he prefers competitive battles in which both sides can improve and usually loses interest in humiliating a defeated opponent.

His enthusiasm can create serious risks. Goku sometimes allows enemies to reach full power, gives them opportunities to recover or withholds his own strongest option because he wants a more satisfying contest. These decisions have endangered Earth and frustrated allies, even when his confidence ultimately proves justified.

Goku is compassionate but not conventionally heroic in every respect. He protects vulnerable people, becomes furious when friends are harmed and repeatedly sacrifices himself, yet he does not seek recognition or formulate his life around public duty. He commonly treats saving the world as inseparable from confronting the strongest available fighter.

Family life does not come naturally to him. Goku cares for Chi-Chi, Gohan and Goten but spends long periods training or absent from Earth. He is more comfortable teaching through combat than discussing emotions. His faith in other people’s ability to improve nevertheless allows former enemies such as Piccolo and Vegeta to become indispensable allies.

As a child, Goku is short and compact, with large black eyes, unruly black hair and a brown monkey tail. His hair retains the same basic arrangement throughout his life, a Saiyan trait that prevents it from changing naturally after birth. He initially wears a simple blue outfit associated with his upbringing under Grandpa Gohan.

After training with Master Roshi, Goku adopts the orange uniform of the Turtle School. The front and back emblems change as he studies under different masters: Roshi’s turtle symbol is followed by King Kai’s insignia and eventually Goku’s own Go symbol. He commonly wears blue wristbands, a blue undershirt, a sash and dark boots.

Goku grows substantially before the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, appearing as a lean adult with greater height and muscle definition. Official guide material lists his adult height as 175 cm and his weight as 62 kg. His physique becomes heavier during periods of intensive gravity training but remains streamlined compared with some Saiyan fighters.

Most Super Saiyan transformations turn his hair golden, lighten his skin tone and change his eyes to green or turquoise. Successive forms alter the length, shape or quantity of his hair, while Super Saiyan 3 removes his eyebrows and extends his hair down his back. Super Saiyan God instead gives him red hair, red irises and a slimmer build.

Super Saiyan Blue combines the Super Saiyan form with divine ki, producing cyan-blue hair and eyes. Ultra Instinct first changes Goku’s eyes to silver while leaving his hair black; its completed silver-haired manifestation surrounds him with a bright, fluid aura. Later refinement allows him to apply aspects of the technique without always using the completed form.

Goku possesses the natural combat aptitude, durability and growth potential of a Saiyan. Near-death recovery once produced significant increases in his power, while difficult battles continually sharpen his instincts. His Saiyan physiology also grants an enormous appetite and allows him to transform into a Great Ape when exposed to sufficient Blutz Waves while his tail is present.

His foundational martial arts come from Grandpa Gohan and Master Roshi. Goku learns to read movement, regulate breathing, conserve energy and adapt techniques after seeing them performed. He is capable of copying certain attacks quickly, but his greatest strength is integrating new principles into a personal, flexible fighting style.

Goku can use ki for flight, sensing, defense, physical enhancement and projected attacks. His control eventually becomes precise enough to detect distant individuals by their energy signatures, conceal his own presence and transfer power to others. He also learns to distinguish ordinary ki from divine ki.

Training under King Kai gives Goku the Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb. Yardratian instruction gives him Instant Transmission and greater understanding of spirit control. Under Whis, he studies divine movement, learns to reduce wasted motion and begins separating conscious thought from physical reaction.

Goku’s transformations multiply or restructure his power. His principal forms include Great Ape, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. Ultra Instinct moves his body independently of conscious thought, greatly improving evasion and counterattacking; later training focuses on adapting the divine technique to his own emotions and Saiyan nature.

• Kaio-ken: Multiplies Goku’s power, speed and senses at the cost of severe physical strain.
• Spirit Bomb: Collects energy voluntarily contributed by living beings and the surrounding environment into a concentrated sphere.
• Instant Transmission: Locks onto a known energy signature and transports Goku instantly to its location.
• Dragon Fist: An anime and film technique that projects a golden dragon through a powerful finishing strike.
• Destructo Disc: Forms a thin rotating disc of ki with a sharp cutting edge.
• Meteor Combination: A sequence of rapid melee blows followed by a close-range energy attack.
• Super Kamehameha: A greatly amplified version of the standard Kamehameha.
• Instant Kamehameha: Combines Instant Transmission with a point-blank Kamehameha.
• Warp Kamehameha: Uses teleportation during the attack’s execution to evade a counter and fire from a new angle.
• Super Saiyan: Transforms Saiyan power through intense emotional activation, producing golden hair and a substantial increase in strength.

Grandpa Gohan is Goku’s adoptive parent and first martial-arts teacher. Goku remembers Grandpa Gohan with uncomplicated affection and treasures the four-star Dragon Ball associated with him. When the two reunite during Fortuneteller Baba’s tournament, Goku recognizes Grandpa Gohan only after their fight and learns that he is content in the afterlife.

Bulma is Goku’s first companion outside the mountains. Bulma introduces him to the Dragon Balls and the wider world, while Goku repeatedly protects her during their travels. Their friendship lasts for decades and connects Goku closely to Bulma’s family, including his eventual rival Vegeta.

Master Roshi formalizes Goku’s martial-arts education. Master Roshi teaches him that training should strengthen the mind as well as the body and secretly enters the World Martial Arts Tournament as Jackie Chun to prevent an early victory from making Goku complacent. Goku continues to respect Master Roshi long after surpassing him in raw power.

Krillin begins as Goku’s competitive training partner and becomes his closest lifelong friend. Goku and Krillin develop from jealous children into fighters who trust one another completely. Krillin’s deaths at the hands of Tambourine and Frieza provoke two of Goku’s most intense emotional responses, with the latter triggering his first Super Saiyan transformation.

Chi-Chi meets Goku during his childhood and secures his promise of marriage, although Goku initially misunderstands what marriage means. As adults, Chi-Chi manages their household and pressures their children to study, while Goku frequently prioritizes training. Their arguments coexist with genuine loyalty and a family life that Goku values even when he struggles with its expectations.

Gohan is Goku’s elder son and possesses extraordinary dormant power. Goku trains Gohan for the Cell Games and entrusts him with fighting Cell, correctly judging his potential but initially failing to account for his dislike of combat. Goten, Goku’s younger son, is born after Goku’s death and first meets his father when Goku returns to Earth for one day.

Pan is Goku’s granddaughter. Goku shows immediate affection for Pan and trains with her during the peaceful years after Majin Buu. His confidence in the next generation also leads him to leave the World Martial Arts Tournament with Uub, whom he intends to train as Earth’s future protector.

Piccolo begins as Goku’s enemy and apparent opposite. Goku spares Piccolo after their tournament battle because killing him would also kill Kami and eliminate Earth’s Dragon Balls. Their reluctant cooperation against Raditz develops into mutual respect, reinforced by Piccolo’s role as Gohan’s mentor.

Vegeta is Goku’s principal Saiyan rival. Vegeta is initially enraged that a low-class warrior can rival a Saiyan prince, while Goku welcomes every increase in Vegeta’s strength. Their competition gradually becomes a durable partnership, although they retain different motives, temperaments and approaches to family.

Bardock and Gine are Goku’s biological parents. Goku grows up without memories of either and initially shows little interest in Saiyan ancestry. Later revelations about Bardock’s attempt to save him and Bardock’s wish that his sons thrive prompt Goku to reflect more directly on his parents and recover the name of his father.

Raditz reveals that Goku is a Saiyan named Kakarot and claims him as a younger brother. Goku rejects Raditz’s demand that he kill Earth’s inhabitants and sacrifices himself to stop him. Nappa and Vegeta’s later arrival forces Goku to confront the violent culture from which he came.

Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta and becomes one of Goku’s most persistent enemies. Goku initially offers Frieza opportunities to withdraw, but the tyrant’s murder of Krillin triggers Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan. Later crises force Goku and Frieza into temporary cooperation without erasing their hostility.

King Kai trains Goku in the afterlife, teaching him the Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb. Kami and Mr. Popo prepare him to face Piccolo at the 23rd tournament. Korin develops Goku’s stamina and perception, while Yajirobe and Dende repeatedly assist him with Senzu Beans or healing.

Whis becomes Goku’s principal divine mentor, teaching him alongside Vegeta on Beerus’s world. Beerus initially threatens Earth but spares it after fighting Goku as a Super Saiyan God. Goku’s informal treatment of both figures unsettles other gods, yet his progress earns their interest.

Jiren presents Goku with the greatest direct challenge of the Tournament of Power and drives his first uses of Ultra Instinct. Broly is another Saiyan whose uncontrolled power fascinates Goku; after their battle, Goku offers to train with Broly rather than treating him as an enemy. Merus later guides Goku’s Ultra Instinct training and demonstrates the selfless discipline needed to use it.

Goku’s first adventures follow his search for the Dragon Balls and successive periods of training. He challenges the Pilaf Gang, the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo, while competing in three World Martial Arts Tournaments. His victory over Piccolo at the 23rd tournament completes his progression from isolated child to Earth’s leading martial artist.

The arrival of Raditz reveals Goku’s Saiyan identity and begins the conflict commonly adapted as Dragon Ball Z. Goku sacrifices himself to restrain Raditz, trains under King Kai and returns to confront Nappa and Vegeta. The aftermath sends his allies to Namek in search of another set of Dragon Balls.

On Namek, Goku battles the Ginyu Force and Frieza. Krillin’s death triggers Goku’s transformation into the legendary Super Saiyan, allowing him to defeat Frieza. After escaping Namek, Goku trains on Yardrat and learns Instant Transmission.

The android conflict brings Goku into contact with Future Trunks, who warns him of a fatal heart virus. Goku recovers and trains Gohan in the Room of Spirit and Time. He entrusts the battle against Cell to Gohan and later sacrifices himself when Cell attempts to destroy Earth.

Goku returns during the Majin Buu crisis, reveals Super Saiyan 3 and teaches fusion to Goten and Trunks. After being restored to life, he destroys Kid Buu with a Spirit Bomb powered by Earth’s inhabitants. Ten years later, he meets Buu’s human reincarnation, Uub, and leaves to train him.

In Dragon Ball Super, Goku attains divine transformations, competes in multiversal tournaments and confronts threats including Goku Black, Zamasu, Jiren, Broly, Moro and Gas. His progress toward Ultra Instinct becomes the central technical challenge of his later training.

Goku begins as a child governed by immediate needs: food, curiosity, companionship and the pleasure of testing his strength. His lack of social knowledge produces comic misunderstandings, but his early journeys teach him cooperation, loss and the existence of opponents who cannot be treated as friendly competitors.

Tournament defeats are essential to his growth. Master Roshi prevents him from believing that he has reached the summit, while Tien Shinhan defeats him narrowly in the following tournament. Goku learns to value training as a continuing way of life rather than a route to one final victory.

Adulthood gives Goku responsibilities that do not always align with his instincts. He becomes a husband, father and defender of Earth, yet remains drawn to remote training and dangerous challenges. His choices show confidence in others’ potential but can also impose burdens on them, most clearly when he pushes Gohan to fight Cell.

Learning that he is a Saiyan does not displace Goku’s Earth upbringing. He rejects the Saiyans’ culture of conquest while accepting their love of battle and capacity for growth. Over time, he becomes more willing to use the name Kakarot, particularly when interacting with Vegeta and Broly, without abandoning his identity as Son Goku.

Ultra Instinct presents a different problem from his earlier transformations. It cannot be mastered through anger or raw exertion alone. Goku must quiet deliberate thought, trust his body and later find a version compatible with his own emotions, turning his continuing development toward self-knowledge as well as greater power.

“Son Goku” is the Japanese reading of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Early Dragon Ball directly adapts elements of that figure: Goku has a monkey tail, carries an extending staff and travels on a magical cloud.

The surname “Son” and given name “Goku” are therefore not separate inventions in the usual sense but the Japanese rendering of the literary character’s name. Creator Akira Toriyama gradually moved the series away from direct parody of Journey to the West while retaining Goku’s name and several associated objects.

“Kakarot,” Goku’s Saiyan birth name, is derived from “carrot.” Saiyan names commonly use vegetable puns, including Vegeta from “vegetable,” Raditz from “radish” and Kakarot from the Japanese pronunciation of carrot.

The written character Go in Goku’s name can be used as an emblem. Goku eventually places this personal symbol on his uniform after previously wearing the insignia of Master Roshi and King Kai.

The television adaptations divide the original manga principally between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Z Kai presents a re-edited version of the later story with reduced anime-original material and newly recorded dialogue.

Dragon Ball GT follows an anime-original continuity in which Goku is transformed back into a child and travels through space for the Black Star Dragon Balls. He develops the Super Saiyan 4 form, whose red fur, tail and dark hair distinguish it from the divine transformations later introduced in Dragon Ball Super.

The franchise’s films give Goku numerous alternate or supplementary battles. Earlier Dragon Ball Z films generally occupy timelines that do not fit cleanly within the manga. Later films—including Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero—connect directly with the modern continuing storyline.

Dragon Ball Daima depicts Goku and many companions transformed into smaller bodies by a wish. Goku travels through the Demon Realm, returns to using the Power Pole extensively and encounters new forms of magic and fusion. The series takes place after Majin Buu’s defeat.

Goku appears in hundreds of games, including the Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Xenoverse, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball Legends, Dokkan Battle and Sparking! series. Games frequently include alternate versions based on age, costume, transformation and continuity.

He also appears in Weekly Shōnen Jump crossover games such as Jump Super Stars, J-Stars Victory VS and Jump Force. Crossovers commonly place him beside later manga protagonists whose creators have cited Dragon Ball as an influence.

Goku has ranked at or near the top of numerous franchise and anime popularity polls. He placed first in the 1995 Dragon Ball character poll published during the manga’s original run and won the Dragon Ball Forever reader poll in 2004.

In the first official worldwide Dragon Ball character poll, DRAGON BALL THE ONE, Goku finished first. The result continued his long association with the franchise’s public identity across markets, languages and generations of adaptations.

Goku appeared repeatedly near the top of Animage’s Anime Grand Prix rankings during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His battles have also been polled independently; an official 2024 Goku Day survey received more than 21,000 votes to rank one hundred of his confrontations.

His spiky hair, orange uniform, Kamehameha stance and Super Saiyan transformation became widely recognizable outside manga and anime audiences. Athletes, musicians and other public figures have referenced his training, transformations or gestures, while large public screenings of later episodes have drawn crowds in several countries.

Goku influenced the design and characterization of numerous later action-manga protagonists. Creators including Masashi Kishimoto and Eiichiro Oda have discussed Toriyama’s work as an important influence, and Goku’s combination of innocence, appetite, competitive joy and escalating martial growth became a prominent model within shōnen storytelling.
