Gohan Son

Gohan is born on Earth in Age 757, the first child of Goku and Chi-Chi. His name honors Grandpa Gohan, Goku’s adoptive grandfather. Chi-Chi raises him with a strong emphasis on academic study and hopes he will become a respected scholar rather than a full-time martial artist.

Gohan’s quiet childhood ends when his uncle Raditz arrives and reveals Goku’s Saiyan origin. Raditz abducts Gohan to force Goku’s cooperation. When Gohan hears his father suffering, his anger releases a burst of power greater than either adult expected, allowing him to break through Raditz’s armor.

After Raditz’s defeat, Piccolo recognizes Gohan’s potential and takes him into the wilderness to prepare for two approaching Saiyans. Piccolo leaves the four-year-old to survive alone for six months, then personally trains him in combat, ki control and discipline. Their initially coercive arrangement develops into a lasting bond.

Gohan fights Nappa and Vegeta during the Saiyan invasion. Piccolo dies shielding him from Nappa’s attack, prompting Gohan to travel to Planet Namek with Krillin and Bulma in search of Dragon Balls capable of restoring their fallen allies.

On Namek, Grand Elder Guru unlocks part of Gohan’s dormant power. Gohan battles Frieza’s soldiers, survives encounters with the Ginyu Force and repeatedly confronts Frieza. These experiences make him an accomplished fighter long before he reaches adolescence.

Gohan has black hair, black eyes and features resembling both parents. His hairstyle changes more often than that of a full-blooded Saiyan because he is half human. He begins as a small child with long hair beneath a round cap bearing the four-star Dragon Ball.

During Piccolo’s training, Gohan first wears clothing modeled on Goku’s uniform. Piccolo later gives him a purple gi resembling his own, marked with the demon character and paired with a white cape. After the Saiyan battle, Gohan continues wearing variations of Piccolo’s colors.

On Namek, he wears Frieza Force-style armor supplied by Vegeta. Before the Cell Games, Gohan trains in Saiyan armor inside the Room of Spirit and Time, then asks Piccolo for a new purple gi and cape. His Super Saiyan hair remains permanently golden during the period when he and Goku maintain the transformed state.

As a high-school student, Gohan wears a school uniform and adopts the Great Saiyaman costume to conceal his identity. The outfit includes a dark bodysuit, green tunic, red cape, white gloves and boots. He initially uses a helmet and later substitutes a bandanna and sunglasses when tournament regulations prohibit armor.

Adult Gohan often wears glasses and formal or casual clothing associated with his work. In combat, he returns to either Goku’s orange gi or Piccolo’s purple uniform. His Ultimate state leaves his hair black but sharpens its shape and changes the intensity of his expression.

Gohan Beast gives him very long silver-white hair, red eyes and a dense aura tinged with violet and red lightning. The extreme hair shape recalls his childhood Super Saiyan 2 silhouette while distinguishing the form from Goku’s silver-haired Ultra Instinct.

• Explosive Wave: Releases ki outward from the body to repel nearby opponents.
• Energy Wave Volley: Launches repeated blasts across a wide area.
• Demon Flash Strike: Combines a rapid physical assault with a concentrated ki attack.
• Super Dragon Flight: Drives an uppercut into an opponent with enhanced speed and force.
• Great Saiyaman Beam: Fires an energy ray while acting through the Great Saiyaman identity.
• Great Saiyaman Pose: A sequence of elaborate poses used to introduce his costumed alter ego.
• Great Ape Transformation: Uses Blutz Waves through the Saiyan tail to become a giant ape with multiplied power.
• Super Saiyan: Transforms through Saiyan power, turning Gohan’s hair gold and substantially increasing his strength.
• Super Saiyan 2: A stronger form first awakened during the Cell Games, marked by sharper hair and electrical energy.
• Ultimate Form: Accesses the potential released by Old Kai without requiring a Super Saiyan transformation.

Gohan’s childhood is defined by power he neither understands nor wants. Adults repeatedly recognize his potential, but Gohan experiences battle as fear, loss and obligation rather than recreation. Piccolo’s training gives him the discipline to act despite that fear.

His bond with Piccolo demonstrates Gohan’s capacity to change others through trust. The child responds to harsh training without inheriting Piccolo’s hostility, and his kindness gives his mentor a reason to protect someone beyond himself. Gohan, in turn, gains confidence and a second parental figure.

The Cell Games bring Gohan’s central conflict into the open. Goku assumes that overwhelming strength will make Gohan eager to fight, while Piccolo understands that the boy dislikes killing. Gohan’s eventual anger gives him victory but also introduces pride and cruelty, producing consequences he regrets.

During the Majin Buu conflict, Gohan again rises to extraordinary strength and becomes overconfident. His failure to defeat Buu reinforces the danger of relying on sudden power without maintaining discipline. Peace afterward allows him to choose scholarship and family, though at the cost of combat readiness.

The Tournament of Power prompts Gohan to pursue his own development rather than imitate Goku’s transformations. He restores his Ultimate state and serves as a team leader, balancing strategy with power. This approach reflects his acceptance that he can be both a scholar and a fighter.

Super Hero repeats the warning against complacency but also gives Gohan a new path. Beast grows from his individual potential rather than divine training or a standard Saiyan progression. His later ability to activate it deliberately suggests greater control over the anger that once erupted only in emergencies.

“Gohan” is the Japanese word for cooked rice or a meal. The food-based name follows creator Akira Toriyama’s broad use of culinary puns throughout the franchise.

Within the story, Goku and Chi-Chi name their son after Grandpa Gohan. The choice links Gohan to the human martial artist who raised Goku rather than to Goku’s Saiyan family or birth name.

“Son” is the family name Gohan inherits from Goku. It ultimately derives from Son Goku, the Japanese name of Sun Wukong from Journey to the West.

The name “Great Saiyaman” combines “Saiyan” with the conventional naming style of costumed superheroes. Gohan’s poses and formal declarations reflect the tokusatsu heroes he imitates, even though other characters find the performance embarrassing.

“Beast” describes the fierce, instinctive power behind Gohan’s newest form. Toriyama designed it as a distinctive evolution based on Gohan’s repeated awakenings rather than another conventional Super Saiyan level.

Early films frequently position Gohan beside Piccolo. As a child, he participates in conflicts against Garlic Jr., Dr. Wheelo, Turles, Lord Slug and Cooler. These films generally occupy continuities that do not align fully with the manga.

Later films emphasize his adolescent or adult strength. Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound centers on Super Saiyan 2 Gohan defending a tournament after Goku’s death. Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon uses his Ultimate-era appearance and Great Saiyaman identity.

Dragon Ball GT portrays Gohan as an adult scholar and family man who continues to possess Super Saiyan power. He is controlled by Baby, later assists Goku against the Shadow Dragons and appears in the series’ concluding generations.

Dragon Ball Daima is set during a period when Gohan is occupied with his studies and largely absent from the principal Demon Realm expedition. His limited role distinguishes the series from later stories in which he resumes regular training.

Gohan is playable in most major Dragon Ball games. Games commonly divide him into child, adolescent, Great Saiyaman, adult, Ultimate and Beast versions, each with techniques and costumes drawn from different periods.

Gohan placed first in a 1993 Weekly Shōnen Jump character popularity poll conducted during the Cell arc, when his Super Saiyan 2 transformation moved him into the story’s leading combat role. He placed third in the 2004 Dragon Ball Forever poll.

In the first official worldwide DRAGON BALL THE ONE popularity poll, Gohan finished third behind Goku and Vegeta. The result placed him ahead of Piccolo and reflected continued support across his childhood, Cell Games and adult incarnations.

His battle with Cell remains one of the franchise’s most frequently discussed confrontations. The transformation into Super Saiyan 2, destruction of the Cell Juniors and Father-Son Kamehameha became recurring subjects of animation, games, figures and promotional artwork.

Reception of Gohan’s later direction has often focused on the tension between scholarship and fighting. Some responses favor his peaceful career as consistent with his established personality, while others criticize periods in which his combat ability declines after major victories.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero renewed attention to Gohan by making his bond with Piccolo central to the story and introducing Gohan Beast. The silver hair, red eyes and Special Beam Cannon finishing pose quickly became prominent in games, cards and merchandise.

Gohan is kind, patient, disciplined, and unusually tolerant. He takes in an aggressive Saiyan infant without knowing anything about the child's origins and perseveres through the difficulty of raising him. After Goku's temperament changes following a childhood head injury, their relationship becomes a genuinely affectionate grandfather-grandson bond.

He is gentle without being weak. Gohan remains an accomplished martial artist and later demonstrates a playful confidence when given the opportunity to test how much his grandson has grown.

Gohan was Master Roshi's first student and became a top-class martial artist in his own right. He possesses considerable strength, speed, agility, ki control, and hand-to-hand skill, and he passes the foundations of that training to Goku. Official Dragon Ball material identifies him as Roshi's top pupil and confirms that he mastered the Kamehameha.

His techniques include the Kamehameha and the fundamental martial arts that shape Goku's childhood fighting style. His experience also allows him to recognize the danger of Goku's Great Ape transformation long before Goku understands its cause.

Gohan finds Goku after the infant Saiyan arrives on Earth and raises him in the mountains. He gives Goku the Four-Star Dragon Ball and warns him never to look at the full moon after witnessing the strange transformation moonlight can trigger.

Goku eventually transforms into a Great Ape and accidentally crushes Gohan to death. Goku grows up unaware that he caused his grandfather's death.

Later, Fortuneteller Baba arranges for Gohan to return temporarily from the afterlife as the fifth and final fighter in her challenge. Goku fights the masked opponent without recognizing him until Gohan reveals himself, leading to an emotional reunion. Official material confirms that Baba brings Gohan back for one day and that he chooses afterward to remain in the afterlife rather than seek resurrection.

Goku is Gohan's adopted grandson. Gohan raises him from infancy, teaches him martial arts, and becomes the first family Goku knows on Earth.

Master Roshi is Gohan's martial-arts teacher, while Ox-King is Roshi's second disciple and therefore part of the same martial lineage.

Fortuneteller Baba later enables Gohan to return briefly to the living world and reunite with Goku.
