Ginji

Ginji is sociable and comfortable enough with Sanosuke to spend his leisure time gambling with him. His interactions with Sanosuke and Tomo are informal, presenting the trio as established friends rather than companions brought together by the main plot.

He also cares about the people in their circle. Ginji is the person who delivers painful news about another friend's experience with opium, immediately changing Sanosuke's attitude toward the drug.

The 1996 anime gives Ginji additional appearances in Sanosuke's everyday social circle. He remains grounded as an ordinary acquaintance rather than becoming part of the Kenshin-gumi's combat adventures.

Ginji has no established martial-arts school, named technique or unusual physical ability. Nothing in the manga identifies him as a fighter comparable to Sanosuke or Kenshin.

His importance is social rather than martial. Through Ginji, information about opium's impact reaches Sanosuke before the group understands Megumi's involvement with Kanryuu.

Ginji appears during a gambling session with Sanosuke and Tomo. Kenshin Himura is also present when their conversation turns to the devastating effects of opium.

Ginji explains what happened to their friend Yoita, giving Sanosuke a personal reason to react strongly when packets of opium later fall from Megumi's clothing.

Moments later, Megumi's attempt to escape Kanryuu's men brings the larger conflict directly to the group. Ginji consequently serves as one of the ordinary characters through whom the human consequences of Kanryuu's criminal business are established.

Sanosuke Sagara is Ginji's friend and gambling companion. Ginji's information about opium strongly influences Sanosuke's initial response to Megumi.

Tomo belongs to the same circle and regularly gambles alongside Ginji and Sanosuke.

Yoita is their mutual friend. Ginji informs Sanosuke that Yoita has died after being deceived into taking opium.

Megumi Takani enters their gambling gathering while escaping Kanryuu's operatives, linking Ginji and his friends to the beginning of her storyline.
