Gedfring

Gedfring is patient, hospitable and intellectually curious. He responds calmly even to unruly visitors and prefers conversation and careful explanation to confrontation.

He understands that Guts is desperate to reach the Flower Storm Monarch but insists that the exhausted travelers first rest and recover. His approach reflects the different relationship with time maintained by Skellig's isolated magical community.

Gedfring is also fascinated by the changes occurring in the outside world. Guts's direct connection to Griffith gives the archmage an opportunity to compare magical theory with firsthand human experience.

Gedfring is a highly accomplished mage with extensive knowledge of the Astral World, spirit trees, the World Spiral Tree and the pathways connecting different layers of existence.

His magical ability is considerable enough that he can summon rain without conducting an elaborate ritual or invoking the Four Kings of the World. He demonstrates this when extinguishing the fires threatening the witches' crops.

Gedfring also possesses knowledge of beherits and the Dragon Path. He recognizes the supernatural significance of the beherit carried by Guts and explains its connection to deeper astral layers.

Gedfring receives Guts and his companions after their arrival at Skellig's mage settlement. Flora had previously appeared to him in a dream and asked him to look after Schierke.

He explains how the Great Wave of the Astral World has altered the relationship between physical and astral realms. His discussion of the World Spiral Tree gives Guts's group a clearer understanding of the scale of Griffith's impact upon reality.

Gedfring later accompanies members of the group deeper into Skellig, including during their meeting with the dwarf Hanarr. When Elfhelm's foundations collapse following Griffith's arrival, Gedfring becomes one of the surviving magic users forced to flee aboard the Seahorse.

Flora is an old acquaintance of Gedfring. She appears to him in a dream before Guts's party arrives and asks him to care for her apprentice.

Schierke receives Gedfring's attention as Flora's apprentice and a fellow practitioner of astral magic.

Guts discusses Griffith, beherits and the transformation of the world with Gedfring.

Morda is one of the younger witches under Gedfring's authority and instruction.

Danann is the Flower Storm Monarch presiding over Elfhelm.

Hanarr is an ancient dwarf whom Gedfring visits alongside members of Guts's group.
