Fumimaro Ayanokoji

Ayanokoji is polite, composed, sophisticated, and occasionally sarcastic. He speaks in a refined Kyoto manner and generally maintains his calm even when an investigation becomes dangerous.

His aristocratic bearing can make him appear aloof, and he is not portrayed as especially sociable. Maro is his constant companion and apparently his closest friend, giving an otherwise restrained character an eccentric and affectionate trait.

Ayanokoji is dedicated to police work. He will investigate suspicious circumstances even while technically off duty and has earned rapid professional advancement through competence rather than family background alone.

Ayanokoji is an intelligent police investigator skilled in deduction, interviewing, crime-scene analysis, coordination, and managing subordinate officers.

Conan regards him as capable of solving cases without needing the constant guidance that some police investigators receive. His calmness allows him to continue analyzing evidence even during stressful incidents.

He is also familiar with Kyoto's geography, traditions, districts, and cultural institutions, knowledge that becomes particularly useful in cases rooted in the city's history.

Ayanokoji first appears in Crossroad in the Ancient Capital as the Kyoto inspector investigating a series of crimes connected to the city's historical landmarks.

He subsequently returns in several films before being incorporated into the manga. His canonical manga appearance establishes him as a recurring Kyoto counterpart to the police officers more commonly encountered in Tokyo and Osaka.

His presence is especially common when Conan, Heiji, or Kogorou Mouri becomes involved in a case within Kyoto Prefecture.

Maro is Ayanokoji's pet chipmunk and constant companion. Ayanokoji carries Maro in his clothing and shows considerable affection for him.

Conan Edogawa has worked alongside Ayanokoji on Kyoto investigations and respects his competence.

Ninzaburo Shiratori is described as having attended school with Ayanokoji, although their supposed friendship or rivalry is treated somewhat skeptically by Shiratori.

Chikasuzu is a young maiko toward whom Ayanokoji shows romantic interest.

Kurumazaki is a Kyoto police detective who works under and alongside Ayanokoji during investigations.
