Frederica Sawyer

Sawyer is quiet, morbid and emotionally unusual even by Roanapur's standards. She treats corpse disposal as ordinary work and displays little discomfort around dismemberment, blood or the chainsaw she uses professionally.

Her electronic voice device is psychologically important as well as practically necessary. Losing it can trigger severe distress, leaving Sawyer unable to function effectively despite the fearlessness she displays when armed.

Outside work she is considerably more ordinary. Sawyer plays video games, spends time with her friends and can display shyness or amusement in social situations. Her friendship with Shenhua and Lotton gives her a small circle in which she appears comfortable.

Sawyer's signature weapon is a chainsaw, which she handles with enough strength and control to use against armed opponents. Her professional experience cutting apart corpses translates readily into close-range violence.

She wears protective clothing during cleanup work and has extensive practical knowledge of corpse disposal. Her business exists precisely because Roanapur's criminal organizations regularly need evidence and bodies removed after violent operations.

Sawyer's major vulnerability is her dependence on her electronic voice device. When it is lost during the Greenback Jane battle, she suffers a breakdown and becomes temporarily incapable of continuing the fight.

Sawyer first enters the main storyline during the bounty hunt for Greenback Jane. She joins the large group of freelancers attacking the Lagoon Company's position and uses her chainsaw to pursue Jane and Rock through the warehouse.

Her attack is interrupted after her electronic voice device falls from the roof. The resulting panic removes her from the fight, and she survives the subsequent collapse alongside several other bounty hunters.

Afterward, Sawyer develops into a recurring freelance operative rather than a one-off antagonist. She becomes closely associated with Shenhua and Lotton and later accepts work connected to Garcia and Fabiola's search for Roberta.

Shenhua is one of Sawyer's closest friends and regular partners. Frederica Sawyer spends considerable time at Shenhua's home and accompanies her on freelance jobs.

Lotton is Sawyer's other regular companion. Frederica Sawyer and Lotton share interests such as video games and repeatedly work alongside Shenhua.

Revy first encounters Sawyer as an enemy during the Greenback Jane bounty hunt. Revy's gunfire forces Sawyer back during their confrontation, although Sawyer's chainsaw can deflect some incoming shots.

Greenback Jane is the bounty target responsible for bringing Sawyer into direct conflict with the Lagoon Company. Sawyer pursues Greenback Jane through the warehouse before losing her voice device.
